Desert Heat Drilling
« on: January 04, 2007, 05:46:36 AM »
I finally ordered my Desert.  I have heard so much about it and I need something to fit under my Equation.  I would like to drill this for control and possibly use it for a combo dry lane/spare ball.  I wont know if I will be able to pick 10's with it until I try in practice, I'm using a plastic ball now.  Here is how my arsenal is drilled:

Robo Rule:  Pin 3 1/2 from pap, just under fingers, MB 1 inch right of thumb
Power Machine:  Pin 4 1/2 from pap, just above fingers, MB 1 in. right of thumb
Equation:  Pin 4 1/2 from pap, 1 1/2 above fingers, GC 3 3/8 from pap w/X-hole
Desert Heat:  2 1/2 - 3 inch pin, 3 oz top weight

I track very high and need to keep the pin in the safe zone

I was considering pin 5 1/2 from pap and just above fingers, gc in palm?

Any Recommendations are appreciated

Trackoholic,

What is your PAP?  Knowing that will help the Tag Team members recommend a layout.  I have mine layed out with the pin under ring finger, CG in palm towards the thumb.  For me, this is a 4 x 3 layout (my PAP is 4-1/4 x3/4).

You will like this ball and it fits nicely under the Equation.  I'm not sure about using it for 10 pins.  Haven't tried that myself.

The Desert Heat will work for ten pins.. that's my ten pin ball

But anyways, mines laid out with the pin below the fingers and the CG kicked. Very nice roll. I can play any line with that except for a deeper line because then it will just keep skidding. My Desert works very well on my lanes, and at this moment it's the first ball out of my bag (until i get the Equation). If you need to know anything else.. feel free to ask.

I found that the Desert Heat responds very well to hand changes. What I am saying is that if you dont put much hand in your shot this ball will go virtually straight.
Rip it and it will hook...could get as much backend on mine as any of my higher line stuff.
I did find that it was better to play down the boards with it...carry was awesome playing this line.Tended to leave soft 10's when swinging it.

I'm thinking about 5.5 X 4.5 pin above fingers.  Thanks for all the info

The ball has virtually no differential. If you drill it weak it'll just roll like dog poop. Keep the pin 4 to 4 1/2 inches from your PAP regardless of your rev rate, tilt or axis rotation and you'll be just fine.

This layout will work very well if you are thinking of using it on the dirt or for a spare ball.

The Desert Heat is a very weak ball with a low differential, but drilled strong it will still hook more than most people want it to.

4X3, OK, but how high is the pin.  This sounds like the reaction I am looking for.

4x3 was a great layout for me with this piece.  Speed vs revs it sounds like we're in the same department as well as having a higher track.  This ball is a great go-to piece for me late in the night.  It allows me to stay in the area of my "A" game.  I can literally play the track area in the third game with this piece when every one else is playing 20-25 and right.  The layout lets the ball want to read the mids, but the cover just pushes it through.  When the ball finally gets up the lane, it just rolls around the corner.  It's nothing flashy, but it gets the job done.  I like to stay away from the skid/flip layouts for drier conditions when I can find the ball that will let me do it.  This ball unlike others from the competitors and the Dry Heat is a bonafide dry lane ball. For me it's a great match and I'm sure you will not be disappointed.  My only concern would be that a 5.5 may push you a bit long.

Trackoholic, just verifying data.  Your Equation has the pin 1.5 above fingers and not mid line, correct?  If so, then I'd also go above fingers with the Desert to help maintain a certain amount of separation in the bag.  Hope this helps some...

Thanks for the advise all, I decided to drill it pin in ring, gc in grip center.  Does anyone care to share your opinions on this layout?

I ordered it from bowling.com for 114 shipped.  best deal I could find.  They even called me with a pin and top weight clostest to my request and told me what the closest they had was.  Quick shipping also.

The pin in my ring puts it about 5 inches from pap and the gc is in my grip center.  I will post again once I try it tonight, Thanks again

The Desert took a little getting used to.  The house I bowled at never has very dry backends and the mids fry quick, so fried heads and mids with carrydown is the condition.  Compared to my equation the Desert was alot cleaner through the front of the lane but it didn't have the big finish, so I had to play a more direct line.  Most of my balls backend pretty big, so the desert will probably be more suitable on a different condition with screaming backends, which I will try friday.  Also, I didn't even try to use it for ten pins.

desert heat will not handle any carrydown.  use it on over reacting backends.
and keep it polished>>>  track delayed reaction works well for that condition.
