Desert Heat or urethane?

Can anyone tell me the difference in reaction from the Desert Heat and a typical urethane ball for dry lane conditions, and I also plan to use it as my spare ball.  Trying to eliminate one ball in the bag

Theres a huge difference between the two.

The Desert Heat is way stronger on the drier lanes and is great for shooting spears. Urethane type balls are now out of date and you probably wouldn't get as good as read as you will with the Desert.

OK, the desert is much stronger on the dry, but I'm trying to avoid over reaction on the dry backends, and for picking a ten pin.

Well if you are trying to avoid over-reaction, the Desert Heat is not the way to go.  It reacts very violently when it sniffs dry.  If you are looking for a spare ball/ toast condition ball, go with a groove urethane.  Best urethane ball still made.

You wont see reaction on dry backends if there is oil on the heads, unless you throw it 4mph. The desert heat hates oil. The slightest bit will make it skid.

HEY BUDDY!

Listen, I would pick up a Desert if you have the opportunity to do so or have it already and pick a weak/tame layout. I feel somewhere between 5 1/2 to 5 3/4" Pin Above the Ring somewhere in that area. The Desert Heat I feel serves its purpose on dry lanes. God Bless and I hope this helps some!

Hey Trackoholic,

I'd say there is an average of about 3-5 boards (dependent upon your rev to speed ratio, axis rotation, tilt...etc) If you want a urethane with a little more pop, take a look at the Columbia Hi Flare urethane. I have a Col Trooper urethane which works well when the lanes are completely fried.

I looked at the high flare urethane, but I would also like to use this as a ten pin/spare ball so popping just shy of the ten pin would mean I will also have to bring the plastic.  I'm trying to serve 2 purposes with one ball.  I ordered a black scout urethane and plan on polishing it as soon as I get it.  Than practice ten pins with it because I'm sure it will react a little more than plastic.  If this doesn't work than I will find a desert.  I appreciate all of the comments, and by the way, do alot of people use urethane balls?

I'm in Northern California where all but 2-3 houses are synthetic so there is usually a fair amount of oil present.  So typically the use of urethane is not really needed, a few guys here and there who are really strong handed maybe but not much.
