Drill Question
« on: March 01, 2005, 05:48:15 PM »
I have been reading a lot about ball drilling the last few week but now I got a Question. I understand that pin up or down is very relative to your speed. If I have a average ball speed about 12-14 mph. Will pin up work better for my game or pin down???? why???

THANKS

There is no direct proper answer to that question because the drilling for any ball depends on the ball, and the oil pattern and lane surface on which you intend to use it and how you want it to react. The other factors, like your release and PAP, are also pertinent but will remain a constant for most balls.

In the vaguest general terms, slower speeds like yours will usually benefit from a higher pin position, but that should never be interpeted as "you must always do that." For example, oilers to used used on heavy oil patterns should almost never have the pin above the fingers.

Pins placed higher will go longer than pins placed lower, BUT only relative to the same ball with the same surface condition.

Hey danny,

Typically placing a pin up vs pin down will create more length.  Therefore, we wouldn't "normally" want to create more length in heavy oil BUT there are exceptions.

Your speed of 12-14 is actually not considered as "average".  It is a little on the slower side (15-17 avg, 18+ fast).  So in your personal case, it is possible to utilize a pin up.  Another important factor in this is if you're drilling a strong mass bias ball, you can place the mb very close to pap
(2-2.5) and the pin will normally be pretty high up but this will still help pull the ball into a very quick roll.  I've done this several times to help bowlers that have problems getting into a roll on heavier oil (high tilt, high rotation).  It depends on how much oil you truly see and what reaction you want.  Hope this helps explain some...

Danny, another thing too remember is if you have low ball speed, where's your track in relation to the grip, is by your fingers or is it really low like mine. If its low then its O.K. to put the mass bais by your pap, if its high by the thumb then you need pin up and high top too get the baLL down the lane. Rick you right about pin up and thank you for getting on here so much too help out, you really do make sense.  Good luck Danny
