Do I really need more balls?
« on: April 27, 2005, 09:09:15 AM »
Forget about the drillings. Do I need more balls or should I (we) just figure out what we have, first? Here's my line-up:

Animal (sanded)
Animal (box)
Rule
X-ception
Slash
Hexplosion

(although not of the Track persuasion, I have a Midnight Scorher and Colossus Supreme for the heavier end and a Drastic Spec R for the lighter end).

You need enough bowling balls to cover the conditions you will see. That may be 2, or 8, or more.....

Bowlers and bowling balls are like women and shoes . . . They don't really need more shoes, and we don't really need more balls . . . However, that ball right there *points* would look really good with my black/silver Tour Ultras . . . (However, these shoes are also a figment of my imagination.)

oz,

I think you should be able to cover nearly every condition you will face with what you have. I would use those balls, and get to know them better before starting to purchase new ones.

Ex, thanks for the help (clint - thanks, I agree you would need to know that also).

I always felt based on how I throw it (changing speeds, hand positions, etc) that I could cover all conditions with 2 balls. Recently, I changed my thoughts to make life easier so I went to 6. However, just as I you said, I did exactly the wrong thing and had so few games on these balls that I had no idea what I was doing anymore. Hence, after 6 year layoff, averaged 203 last year with 2 balls and 195 this year with 12.

So, this Summer, I going with these (excluding the extreme condition balls) and see if I can get to 210-215 next year where I feel I should be. (I was 203 in 97-98 with old equipment). Thanks again.

Hey ozsweet,

Our arsenals tend to vary upon necessity.  House shots, tournaments or sport shots.  Another big contributing factor to an individual's arsenal is his overall speed to rev ratio.  For the bowler who has more speed then revs, he may not need a wide variety due to smaller amount of overall hook created.  For the bowler who matches up speed to revs, I'd say a good 6-8 balls with different covers and layouts should do the trick.  For the bowler who has more revs then speed, this bowler will probably end up with the most in his arsenal as he will see more hook then the other two types.

Thanks, again - that's a good point because now that I have dropped to 15 lbs, I throw it way too hard. However, I'm not worried about overall hook, just entry angle and carry. Right now of the balls mentioned, the only 2 that were NIB drilled for me are the 2 Animals. The others were bought used and re-gripped. So my concerns are moving forward as I build my new arsenal.

oz,

Personally, I think that your best bet would be to let us know when you are ready to replace one of the balls in your current arsenal. You do have a ball for most conditions....you may lack in the dry lanes department a bit....but the hexplosion should put you close.
