How much ball is the Spell?
« on: March 25, 2004, 10:15:00 AM »
I'm thinking about getting one of these since it has the weightblock that I love from the Nighthawk SPT and Nighthawk Revenge.  Exactly how much ball is it and what kind of reaction should I expect from it?

Well, I'll be honest with you... NOBODY liked this ball much... I can only name 3 people that actually LOVED this ball - (those 3 would be Me, LuckyLefty, and Norm Duke). The ball gets good length and basically snaps to the pocket. It's such a good rolling, smooth rolling ball it's scary!!!

I've shot several 750 + sets (not a brag!) with this ball when lower hooking balls wouldn't recover strong... but this one would! This is a particle (which everybody knows I love Particles over Reactives). It's a Higher RG, Medium/High RG Differential... which helps the ball get length eventhough it's a particle ball.

My ProShop guy (who drills for some of the Pro's) says this ball was extremely UNDERrated!!! He says the only reason it didn't sell was because of the color. But I don't think it's a ugly ball at all! Put in some purple colored finger inserts and a purple colored thumb slug and it looks rather cute looking!

Unfortunately, mine died of Particle Death after 60-70 games... but what Particle ball doesn't?

When the ball was NEW, I kept it poslished to about 2000, and now since the backend is somewhat milder than when it was new, I keep the SPELL polished to about 3500 and use it on a little bit Drier shot than when I did when it was new, basically a shot that's got Stronger backends or a Bumper Shot... it's such a true rolling ball (good rolling when new - and good rolling after it starts to die)!!! You can't lose with this ball!

It's been said that the SPELL was one of Norm Duke's main balls if that tells you anything!!! It does to me!

Put me on that list too. I loved mine, but tampered with the coverstock too much and eventually killed the ball. Too much sanding and polishing on my end.

All in all, a very smooth rolling ball. Very consistent reaction and the hit on this ball is very good. I think this is one of the "hidden" gems that nobody knows about!!

Just what i expected... see only one person besides me replied! Meaning; not many people bought this ball or they would be giving a reply, either positive, or negitive. So many people missed out on this great ball by not buying it!!!

The SPELL and the THRASH are the only Track balls (in the last 2 years) that I have actually liked!!! You all remember my problems with the Phenom and how I thought that ball was overated, don't ya'll? The THRASH is a good ball also, I like the ball... it actually hooks - and hooks alot!

If Track would re-issue the SPELL in a more "durable", and longer lasting PARTICLE cover and give it the same exact High RG, Medium/High RG Differential SPELL core...

...BUT...

...give it a prettier colored cover, then this ball would sale well beyond TRACK's imagination!!!

Norm Duke obviously knew what he was talking about when he made the comment about liking the SPELL as much as he did... I forget his actual words but I know he liked it pretty well!!!

If Track doesn't keep this core in production and put it in more upcoming ball releases, then they are missing out on some good balls! This is one Track ball that actually hooked for me... and this is coming from a guy that couldn't get his 2 differently drilled Phenom's and 1 Super Freak to hook at all - my reactive AND particle Tornado ran circles around these 3 balls on the same fresh heavy head oil, slightly strong backend shot!!! And no they weren't burning energy too early because I even tried them polished and they went even more straighter!

Alright - start the flame war on me Track Fans.

I'm not a fan of the current Track line either. The covers are all very strong and so are the cores. I tried a Dry Heat and was very unhappy with it. The ball got good length and then was way too sensitive to the dry. Over under big time! Everything else in their lineup would roll to early for me to even consider trying. I've been killing the lanes lately with a Sonic X. What does track have that is comparable. Nothing! You would think lower rev bowlers would have good success with their stuff due to the balls strength. I have a low rev friend who liked his Freak Out, but that ball left ten pins about 70% of the time on pocket hits. That same bowler recently shot 800+ in the same house With a Lane 1 Cranberry. The difference? Carry. Another friend of mine is a 200+ average, lighter handed lefty. He picked up a Mutant. Couldn't find a breakpoint with it. It kept rolling too early. He has returned to his old Danger Zone and is bowling much better with it.
I've liked track stuff in the past. Heck, I just picked up a NIB Hex. Their current lineup leaves me unimpressed. I also don't see many in the leagues I'm bowling in in the Philly area. I see mostly Storm, Columbia, Brunswick, Hammer, and some Roto-Grip.
Track, please make me something with length and arc. Put it at a Mid price point and then you'll have a product I can actually use.
