Help on Desert Heat drilling

Hey Trackers...
Need some suggestions on drilling a Desert Heat for my Stepson. His computer is down this weekend and I am filling in for him. He is having some trouble on lanes that have light oil on heads and midlane and carry down from not cleaning the backends, sounds common in a lot of houses. His Threat gets through the heads and midlane but is over, under reaction. Sand the Threat and this makes the backend reaction weak. He has a desert Heat waiting to be drilled up. The starting weight is 15.4 with 3 1/4 top and 2" pin. His PAP is 4 5/8 and 3/4 up. His speed is about 17-18 MPH and has a lot of revs. He has a tournament coming up and is expecting the same conditions somewhere in the tournament. He is now debating whether to go with a 5X5 layout or go to a more of a snap drill. He has some tournaments coming up in the next couple of weeks. Any suggestions out there from the Tracker's will be greatly appreciated.

Mine is pin under fingers, cg kicked toward PAP (ends up being about a 5x3 drill) and is even through the front with decent pop on the backend, as is the case with any Track ball. Really have not used it enough yet to get a great feel for what it can do nor have I used it on a true carrydown shot.

Hey jody,

I'd do a 4-4.25 x 3 with pin 1.75-2 above mid line.  His O/U reaction is coming from his vertical movement of 3/4 up (I'm the same) and his combination of speed to rev ratio.  I'd leave the statics a little high to start and then decrease to control the backend reaction as needed.

A 5x5 layout for "him" would force his pin into the negative finger quadrant and this would make the ball react "extremely" late.  Just thought I'd let you know....

The Desert is pretty weak in general, so don't be afraid to place a stronger layout on the ball. 4-4 1/4 pin from PAP should be perfect (as Rick mentioned).

Stay away from a control layout if the backends have a lot of carrydown.  The desert heat still can jump a little with the right layout.

A control layout is also called a label layout.  This is when you have the cg on the grip center line or "on the palm".  Usually the pin is located to the right of the cg for right handers.  This is a great layout for when the backends are flying.
