Encounter with Sport Shot
« on: February 23, 2006, 02:49:56 AM »
Here at my local house they started a sport League. I don't bowl on it, but I do have the advantage of comming after league and bowling on that shot last night.

Needless to say, my first few games my scores were rather low. It almost seemed like a reverse block, except there was not a complete OOB on the outside. The shot seemed to have a fairly dry area from 18 out to about 12. 12 to the gutter was fairly oily, but the back was still fairly fresh, so the ball would not go complety off the deep end. From 23 to 17 there was the same sort of oil that was from 12 to the gutter.

At first, I had no idea that this was a sport shot until one of my fellow bowlers mentioned it to me. I first started with my fired up. I played straight up 10. If I tugged, the ball went brooklyn, if I threw it out a board, never came back. So I then pulled out my Freak, threw 20 to about 15, and carried everytime. If the ball ever broke outside of 12, it would hang, but if I tugged it a little, I could still get to the whole. Needless to say, I was able to get back to my regular average for two games playing this sort of shot.

This is the first time I have ever bowled on a sport shot, and the key was a) figure out what the pattern is like and B) figure out where you have the most room.

I found that for the type of pattern I was on, strokers probably would have the greatest advantage. They could either get a heavy oil ball and play around 8, or get a dry ball and play around 13. Tweeners such as myself who like to play 12 or 13 to 8 or 5 are at a dissadvatage because we are moving from a dry portion to an oily portion. I could also see crankers doing well on this shot as long as they got deep enough, say 25 or 30 board, and got the ball to 15. As long as they wouldn't get it past 12 board, they would be ok.

AnotherLefty,

Actually, this isn't true. They only had two on a lane. It is a really small league. The bowler who told me about the shot bowled on the league, and he saw the same thing. The only difference was there was a better transition area from the middle of the lane out to 14 or 15. That was gone.
