Equation
« on: August 04, 2007, 09:45:03 AM »
Thinking of drilling an Equation 5 1/2 x 5 1/2, pin 3 1/2 above GC.  This should put the pin above and between the fingers, and the "mass bias" (yeah, I know it's symmetrical) a little left of my thumb.  The ball I got has a 2.5" pin.

I expect this ball to go long and have a huge backend off the dry.  It should fit under my Machine for med/med-light patterns, and be very helpful on Cheetah.  Does this all sound good?  Should I push the pin up a little more?  My PAP is 5 3/8 x 1 5/8.  I have lower revs and throw 16-17 mph, semi-roller track.  Thank you.

Spinner,

One of the mistakes that many players make when it comes to the Cheetah is that they feel length and backend balls/layouts will work. WRONG(most of the time). What is generally needed for that pattern is a ball that will not read the friction too strong, and not be very sensative to the oil that is close to the 4th-5th boards.

I like the layout you have, it would probably be perfect for a house shot, but the PBA patterns do not generally allow a bowler to use something with a high gloss. If you go with that layout I would suggest you work the surface to probably 1000-2000 abralon.

Okay, but I should add that I don't play Cheetah outside of 5.  I play inside, which can be anywhere from 20 over 12-14 to 30 over 12-14 depending upon how burnt the heads are.  Of course I have had problems with doing this, but I hate the "risk-reward" line, and up until now, I had not had a ball weak enough to do this with.  Now with my Equation, I felt that I could do better playing the inside track because the ball was weak enough.  But, as you have said, big backend on this pattern is generally not the best way to go.  I can see what you mean; a more "arcy" ball will not jump so quickly off the dry boards too.  Logical.  But I will want to try the Equation OOB on house and Cheetah before I go changing it, of course.  I'll have to see how the ball reacts in both cases, and then under both conditions 1000-2000.  Thanks for the advise, Carl.  I appreciate it!

spinner,

I understand what you think bud, but the middle of the lane on the Cheetah is very much a risk/reward situation. Many people are out of place playing outside, but it is good to learn the different angles.
