Experiment & Results: Track Magic Shine Polish
« on: August 16, 2006, 02:44:26 AM »
Hey BR & Track Family,

I recently acquired an 8 oz. bottle of Magic Shine. I have been wanting to try this polish for a long time now. I finally have my hands on a bottle!

I am looking forward to using this stuff on my "Skid-Flippy," type stuff to try and keep that same reaction intact.

Which balls have you used it on (Can be Track or Non-Track), and did you find the ball to go longer and react stronger in the back? Of course, this is contingent upon other factors such as layout, type of coverstock, etc.

But in general, did Magic Shine do what it was supposed to do in regards to your ball's reaction after applying?

Thanks!
Ramdy Pederson

Ram -
Magic Shine works great as a polish, especially if applied with a spinner. I apply it directly with a 4000 abralon pad after a thorough cleaning to my One and while it's not quite "box finish" when done, it gets pretty close.

Ram,

I have never been a user of Magic Shine; tried it a few times and I think I know now why I didn't like it: It didn't do what I thought it should do or what I expected it to do. Oddly, now I know why and I may become a bigger or more regular user of this stuff. I just learned (you're never too old to learn; only too arrogant and stubborn!) from a Track guru (THANKS, Rick!) that Magic Shine has no grit in it. So, once you've sand the ball to a certain grit and then used Magic Shine to add some length, you'll have the same base grit level under the polish/shine that you started with.

I had been under the impression that Magic Shine had grit in it. Now I know better. I much prefer knowing the ball's surface will be exactly where I left it.

So, the same ball with 600 grit, 1000 grit or 1500 grit, PLUS a dose of Magic Shine should have 3 relatively distinct reactions, lengths, and ball path shapes, depending, of course, on the ball, the oil and your release and ball speed. People with more revs will usually see greater differences in such balls than will strokers.

Go for it, Ram-ses!!

Do it to it and squeeze it easy!!

I love Magic Shine. I switch back and forth from Brunswicks Factory Finish Polish to the Magic Shine. They both leave the grit surface of the ball as is and add length and snap. Comparing those two brands, I would say the MS gives a stronger move on the back than the BFF. They both give nice length. The BFF is more of a paste and is very easy to use. The MS is a little more liqufied and takes a little more patience to use. Its also not very effective using the MS by hand. A spinner is your best friend. Hope this helps a little.

my delta 1 OOB finish jumped too early for me, with
a nice arc.  i dabbed the magic shine on, 2 coats, and
now it goes longer with a strong arc on backend.

Presidential duties must be very wearing, if you don't remember our message exchange of 2 days ago in which you told me there was no grit/abrasive in Magic SHine. Who's your Monica Lewinsky??

Rami.....

I have used Magic Shine in my pro shop since I opened.....it is awesome. As charlest mentioned the grit you use under the polish is very imporant.

Hey BR & Track Family,

Ok, finally got to take the experiment ball with a coat of Magic Shine out for a spin.

The Guinea Pig ball
Ebonite The one - Pin about 1/2" over the ring finger and MB position 1 1/2"-2" right of thumb with weight hole in thumb positive quadrant. (I know, I know, it's not a Track ball, but hey, I used Track Polish! Forgive me this time hehe.) *Pictures will be up tonight*

The Application Process
I put the ball on the spinner and cleaned it with clean n' dull, paper towels and a spray bottle filled with water to spritz it here and there.

Then I hit the ball with a White Scotchbrite Pad on Two Sides Only. (Grips Facing up and then the opposite side.)

I applied about 4-5 light dabs of Magic Shine on a Paper Towel and did one side facing up. I spritzed water on the ball while applying the Magic Shine with moderate pressure. I repeated this step when I flipped the ball over.

Ball was clean, shiny & tacky!

The Test Drive
Last night took the ball out for a spin in our Sunday Family league. Medium Crown shot on 20 year old wood lanes with heavier concentration of oil in the middle. Didn't get any practice shots in as I was rushing to get to league.

Ideal line was 10 at the arrows and out to about 5 at the breakpoint. With the Magic shine, the ball cleared the heads like it was nobody's business. It was super clean through the front. I got a nice hard arc on the backend that carried with better than average results. Got great hold as well if I tugged it in a board or two! As the night went on, I moved a total of 2-3 boards! That is a record for me as I usually migrate left way more than that on a normal league night. I was pretty much able to stand in the same spot (area) all night.

Game 1 - Front 10, then swisher 10 pin! Whiff it for a 288
Game 2 - Front 7, *Solid 9! spare*, punch out for a 279
Game 2 - Choke city, Front 3, split, strike, spare and strikes here and there for a 221.

788 Series. Missed the 800 this time by 12 pins. It's ok, the league isn't sanctioned so I guess I shouldn't feel too bad haha. It cost me a chance at the $100 House bonus for shooting an honor score though! All in all I was impressed with the way the ball handled the Magic Shine. Ball cleared the fronts real nice and the backend move was neato!

I will try to experiment with different grits (600, 800, etc.) under the coat of Magic Shine next time and see if there is a difference.

Thanks everyone & Thanks Track!

I learned that the hard way. I was wondering why my FAZ was burning up when it was highly polished with Magic shine. It reacts way different than other polishes such as Black Magic.
