Title: Finally a member of the Track family!
Post by: Nollster on March 18, 2005, 03:48:20 AM
Picked up an Animal from pjr300 and I can't wait to get it drilled up.  I've wanted one since my summer league when I heard this thing shatter the deck from the other end of the center!!  Anyway, I don't want to drill this up to be strictly a heavy oiler -- I want it for a more angular look at the med. heavies than my Rush gives me.  If I keep it pin above and right of ring with MB about 2" right of thumb but polish it up some, will that work??  I'm a med.-high mph/higher rev. bowler shooting for about a 45* axis rotation and not too much tilt.  Sorry don't know exact numbers or my PAP.

Welcome aboard!

The layout you mentioned should give you the look you want. The Animal by nature is not going to be as angular as the Rush is. I had a Rush a while back, at the same time I had a couple of Animals. TOTALLY different.

I think you are going to have to play around with the grit you put under the polish in order to get the reaction you desire.

Thanks Ex!!  My Rush is a very smooth move into the pocket, but it's a big sweeper look.  A teammate of mine has an Animal (forget how it's drilled), but his goes pretty long and then just heads for home.  His ball speed is quite a bit lower than mine and he's got his pretty shiny.  I'll play around and see what happens.  Regardless, I don't think you can make a mistake in picking up this ball!!

Nope. No going wrong grabbing an Animal.

Animal is a great choice, tell us what you think after having it for a while.

Hey Nollster,

Good pick up.  The Animal has one of the most versatile covers I've worked with to date.  Sand it for heavy, matte for med/med and polish it and it'll work on med lite oil as well.

Without knowing your pap, the layout still sounds kind of close to what you want as well.  If you match the cover of the Rush(800), I'd say it's about 4-5 boards stronger and that's being conservative.  Keep us posted after you get to try it out...welcome aboard.

Thanks guys!!  I dropped it off today to have them drill it up -- can't wait to get it back....Wish I knew my PAP, too -- definitely have to get these numbers for my personal reference.  I'm also going to have them take it back to box condition as a baseline -- should work OK on our league shot.  Much as I hate to say it, I think the arsenal is complete...

Picked up my Animal today -- don't know if I'll get to throw it this weekend, but definitely by Monday!!

Hey Vince, I think that counts!  You've helped another member strengthen their arsenal, I think that makes you at least an advisory member, something of that nature! :-)

Whew, good thing! :-)  I've been toying with getting a GP2 for a while, and seeing your price I just couldn't resist.  I've got some Track gear i'll get rid of cheap if you wanna throw something Track (or anybody for that matter).

Finally got to roll the Animal last night and the results were none too impressive.  Fortunately I know it's no entirely the arrows fault, so we'll fix the problem and try it again.

Numbers aren't worth posting, but the ball reaction is.  I wanted them to bring the ball back to box finish as I wanted the Animal to be my flippier med/med. heavy piece to go with my "oh so smooooth" 800 grit Rush.  I think they got a little too happy with the polish as the Animal is quite shiny -- stunning, actually -- but that's not what I was looking for.  Instead of having them take some of the finish off, I thought I'd give it a try.  It went long -- really long -- and never quite got back to the pocket.  If I threw it a little wider to get into some dry, it still went too long and hit the 3-6 pocket.  I prefer to keep my ball speed up, so I switched to the Rush for late game 1/game 2 and started crushing the pocket.  By the end of game 2, the Rush was getting too strong, so I thought I'd try the Animal again.  A little better results as I started hitting the pocket, but was leaving 10 pins.  Finished the game with the Rush, moving in a little deeper.

Bowled 4 more games with the Animal vs. Apocalypse and by now I was getting a little tired.  I was throwing the Apocalypse 30 to 15 at the arrows and the Animal was 33-35 to 15 at the arrows and I was now getting the reaction I had expected earlier.  When I hit the hole, the Animal does all I was told it would and, I think, this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.  I just have to get this baby roughed up a little bit.

Any suggestions on a good grit?  I was thinking to start at 1000 grit wet sand to start....It's drilled up pin above/right of ring with MB 2" right of thumb and the X-hole a little in/down from PAP......Don't want to lose the flippiness, but I definitely want it to read earlier than it did last night.

eh...i know exactly what you mean.

i have animal, originally drilled like yours, mb in strong position, i took the surface to 600, 400, but the ball never quite read early enough in oil.  nor did it "stand up" fully.  then i redrilled with mb on the VAL.  coverstock scuffed.  definitely reads earlier, but still some difficulty reading the lanes and standing up at the breakpoint.  not burning up and rolling out, just not standing up enough to face the pocket well.

i also tried variety of hand positions and sometimes it rolls good, sometimes it doesn't.  my result is that the ball responds differently to different release.  could be a good thing for some ppl, bad for others.

this ball just left me with mixed results.  definitely not my goto ball, i actually had it replaced with UI and it's definitely more rolly/predictable in heavy oil situations.

but the ball's pretty good in medium/dry conditions.  with dry backend, the ball will come back from anywhere.  but then what ball doesn't?

pretty much replaced it with my xception for medium/dry lanes.  now xception, this ball goes looong then flips hard.  faces the pocket very well too.  restored my faith in track.

Hey Nollster,

Try taking it down to about 400-600, this should give you a much stronger reaction.  When polished, this ball did go quite a long way especially with it's design.  A while back when the ball came out, we all discussed the natural length of this ball so dulling the cover was necessary for any heavier oil condition.  Try it out and let us know how it goes, thanks.

Nollster,

Box finish on the Animal is not polish, it is compound (Track's Clean n Sheen). If you have to go with polish, then sand it down to about 800, then apply a light coat of polish.

I also feel that 1000 grit wetsand would work really well. It will get down the lane "decently", but as long as you keep it in some oil long enough it will backend well.

Polish and the Animal are not a good mix. The polish does not allow it to pick up the early roll that it naturally wants to accomplish. And the particles in the cover of the Animal are too large for it to backend very strongly.

I had requested them to put it back to box finish (from what looked like a 600 grit) -- apparently they misunderstood what I wanted.  The roll I was getting was just like my Eraser PP (polished to like 2500) when I first got it.  Skid to about 50ft., but not enough room to recover.  Had it wet sanded to 1000 and it's schweet!!  What I couldn't believe was how much the Animal revs -- it's right up there with most of my Roto stuff!!

Now that's what I'm talking about!!  Had my Animal taken down to 1000 grit (Abralon pad) and MUCH better!!  Thing revs up in a hurry with a very easy to read break.  Everything was carrying pretty well -- I think I'm going to LOVE this ball!!

Good to hear.

When it is set a lower grit, try keeping it in the oil awhile....it will amaze you in every aspect of the the way it will react

Hey Nollster,

Same here bud, glad to hear.  The Animal to me still has one of the most versatile covers because mine at 400 for heavy oil never burned up or out at all.  The spin time was high enough to help retain its psa very well.
