Freak
« on: January 07, 2004, 11:28:31 PM »
Well I drilled up a used freak stacked 3 3/8" pin in line with PAP and ring.

Surface at 600.

This ball is smooth to the pocket and drives the pins well.  It does need head oil or it does burn out quick.  After about 5 games on a fresh pair I had to put it up brecause it would lose axis rotation too quickly and hit flat.

I could play this ball up the back or with moderate axis rotation and it still hit well.  I will still play with the surface and see what type of reaction I can get with it.

Rick - Problem is I was bowling on a fresh shot at CV and at the times we bowl I don't know if I could ever use this ball.  I might if I polish it.

I have a Freak as well, but mine is fairly angular, very good length, especially for a particle, good backend, amazing recovery, and the hit is like nothing else.  I'm starting to see a loss in reaction though, and have discussed greatly with Rick (tenpinspro) about what to do with it.

Doc,

Why polish it when clearly the best option is for you to get a Freak Out for that condition???

Excaliber - LOL I have so many bowling balls around the house I think the floor will begin to tip the house over.  I haven't thrown track stuff in awhile so I am going to play with this one first and then see what comes from it before I buy any more track.

Doc,

Even though this is an "older" Track ball (it's not very old at all), it is still an awfully strong ball. That makes me think you might have put the pin too close to your PAP, maybe it's flaring too much and too early. OR it's surface could be too strong. Again for such a strong ball, 600 is pretty dull. For both those reasons I have never ventured near a Freak (in more ways than one! ).

If it were slightly weaker, in cover and/or in drilling, may you could use it over a longer period of time.

I've been reading a bunch of recent articles by coaches online and in hard copy. More than one has said that the ball you start with should probably be just barely usable on that condition/pattern. So that, once a few games go by, that ball becomes very usable and totally appropriate for the gradual breakdown of that oil pattern.

Just a thought or three.

Charlest - with speaking with Rick my teammate who is a track staffer and a pro shop owner we talked about drilling something with a strong layout due to my speed and rev rate.  I know that 600 is pretty dull but I wanted to see what the ball would be like if it was thrown to where it broke down to lane conditions with little upkeep.  I will adjust the coverstock and see what happens next.  I have no problems getting in deep and I also have the ability to throw a ball dead straight and kill the hook.

I will report back after a little more testing.

Update

Well I just polished up the Freak to see how it will do since I was having trouble with it carrying at the pin deck.  Went to another house that is putting up more oil and I was on a fresh shot.

Well this ball still needs a lot more oil as it tends to stand up too quickly.  I tried just about everything.  Changing axis tilt, rotation, playing up to 5th arrow.  This ball does roll well but definitely needs the head oil.  With the drill pattern that's on the ball it is very hand sensitive.

Next step is to plug and redrill and put the MB closer to the track.

Doc, if it's the ball i think it is <wink> the drill is about as strong as you can get. It was set up as stacked leverage with the pin & CG at 3 3/8 from the PAP. The weight hole is below the PAP on the VAL. In other words, this is a max flare ball set up for the floods.

Boy, I miss the floods... sigh....

The ball you are thinking of is exactly the same ball.  I just changed the pitches and changed the length a little.

If I had a lot more head oil I could get this to work.  I will probably plug it and redrill it.

I will post another update soon.
