anger on the lanes
« on: November 18, 2004, 04:06:39 AM »
Last night during league play the lanes were dressed with a more
difficult shot than usual. we never have a gimme shot but not a
terrible shot. as everyone was finishing up their final game I
stated to one of my team mates "you can tell we had a harder
condition tonight, listen to the balling balls hitting the floor,
ball returns and balls being kicked along with complaints about
the lanes." I did have a bad night (530 something) alot of pocket
10's and pocket splits, however thats the game. I noticed that
most of the anger came from the younger crowd who, when leaving
a pocket 10 pin or split act as if the world will end. I remember
bowling in the past (15-20 years ago) you may have given your bowing
ball a well needed slap, had an extra beer, or left the house without
speaking but the language and tempers over a game caught me by
surprise. I quit bowl years ago due to taking the game too seriously
and not having a good time. I hate to see others make the same
mistake. Is this anger typical of todays bowler, just the younger
crowd, or just rednecks in general?

I never dreamed it would be me, My name for all eternity, Recorded here at this hallowed place Alas, my name, no more my face. "In the line of duty," I hear them say: My family now the price to pay. My folded flag stained with their tears; We only had those few short years. The badge no longer on my chest, I sleep now in eternal rest. My sword I pass to those behind, And pray they keep this thought in mind. I never dreamed it would be me, And with heavy heart and bended knee, I ask for all here from the past: Dear God, let my name be the last.

I'm 46 and smacked my fist into the wall in a fit of anger back about 13-15 years ago.  I had a compound fracture of my hand and suffice it to say has cured me of any outbursts.  I do still mumble to myself but that's the extent of it.

I think its a bit of both. I mean, more or less it is the younger crowd (anywhere from 20 or 25 and below) that gets out right mad and shows it, or thats how it seems. There are also some older people (meaning over 25 or so) who do the same thing. Me, the most I ever do is maybe let out a swear and a middle finger to a pin, but I dont YELL it, I just kind of mumble to myself. Besides that I just kind of get quiet and let myself calm down. (or try to, still working on it, I suck at it though lol)

Well, I think it's more common in the younger bowlers, but not completely unheard of in the older set.

However - there is nothing that makes me happier than watching an opponent get mad.

I would venture to say that when I see that, both tougher conditions and younger bowlers not doing so well,..they're losing side bets, brackets and hi-pots,..I'd bet it not because there team just lost a point,..

I have to admit that I still get really angry at some things. For instance, last night, I left a pair of 10's in the pocket, which really didn't bother me that much because they were both flat with the 6 either falling dead in the flat gutter, or going around the 10. 90% of those are the bowler's fault, and I realize that, so no big deal. Make an adjustment and move on. What got my goat was me making an adjustment and leaving a stone 7-10. At that point, I lost it. I'm not a kicker or a swearer, but I do have an occasion to raise my voice the few times that I leave something like that, and I chose that moment to do so. I do see people that are MUCH worse than I have ever been tho. People that kick ball returns, scream obscenities, etc., at just about everything that doesn't carry. I sometimes wonder what they are thinking when it's pretty clear why they are stoning something. Maybe it's a matter of perception. *shrugs*
