Got an Untamed...what next?
« on: July 30, 2004, 10:51:07 PM »
I purchased an Animal Untamed for my summer leagues, and I am more than satisfied with the hit, the control, and the carry that it delivers. In the short time I've had it, I already believe it to be the best ball I've ever purchased. Being primarily a Brunswick man, I have now seen the light and want to switch my equipment over to Track as much as possible. So for the fall, I plan to purchase one, maybe two new balls. Thinking definitely an Animal for when I need a step up from the Untamed, and then possibly a Sheer Havoc or a Freak-A-Zoid when I need a step down. I plan to keep my Brunswick SlayR for dry lanes, and I have a Raging Inferno which has tamed considerably in reaction as of late, so I'm kinda unsure what to do with it. Not in need of drilling suggestions yet since I'm not for sure what I'll be able to purchase. 14 MPH, medium revs, slightly low track...fire away with input.

For the inferno, if you wanna get some reaction back I suggest the Ebonite Hook again system. That or simply soak it in a hot soapy bath for about half an hour and clean it really good with a towel and a house hold cleaner. As for the other suggestions of balls, they seem like a fair choice, would fit nicely depending on drillings. But your not asking for drillings so anyways. As for switching all to track, I would not consider doing that, it makes things easier, but limits you so much on choices of what you can get.

BK, not really. True, you may only want to purchase from that particular company but Track has a ball to cover every condition and balls that give lots of different looks on the lane.

With that said, Brambo, you are right in getting the Animal and as for a step down from the Untamed, I think the Sheer would be a nice choice as well. The Animal being a high load particle for the soup and the Sheer a lighter load to be used when they break down or have carrydown. The hit on these balls will be similar to that of your Untamed and I am sure you wont be disappointed with either of them. Heck, why stop there, build a full arsenal of Track. They have a ball to cover everything. Good Luck and feel free to message me if you need any other ball suggestions.

Just a clarification.  The Animal is a low load particle, solid/pearl blend.  It will still handle more oil than the Untamed.  Drill it strong and scuff off the polish and you'll have a winner.

If you like the Untamed, the Freak-a-Zoid also uses a version of the Mutant weight block. The block was taken an revolved 360 deg. I believe that this would be the best choice to follow under the Untamed. I just saw Del at an east coast show and ordered one for myself. Gotta believe that you will like this . I will post results when I receive it.

You could switch to all Track and not miss a beat.

The Animal is the best oil ball on the market, so it is a very good step up from the Untamed. As for underneath the Untamed, if you want to stay with Track your options are limitless. What it would really come down to is what kind of reaction you would be looking for....I could give you a list, that would be easier:

-Havoc: similiar reaction, just not as strong
-Sheer Havoc: Very smooth, gets through the heads very well.
-CrunchTime: More Length and a stronger backend aka more skid and snap than either of the previously listed balls.
-Crash: longer than the Crunchtime with just a hair less backend reaction

-----The Freakazoid will fit there as well, but it is difficult to post about it because I have heard a few different things about the reaction. I tend to agree that it would be a natural fit based on the core numbers, and coverstock/core matchup.

Hallelujah!  Sorry, couldn't resist....

Hey Bram, I agree with Ex on his choices.  Only one thing, because of my slower speed and high tilt, I actually had a fair amount of backend reaction from my Sheer Havoc.  Some of the guys are saying how smooth it is but for me it was pretty sharp on the backend.  I would have to say that this can be explained by looking at who's saying it smooth and who's saying it's strong.  The guys with faster ball speeds seem to be in agreement and the slower guys also seem to be in agreement.  Personally, I'm pretty close to your speed.

I'm going to start comparing and recommending equipment like I do at the shop.  Without having to know every aspect about your game, just tell me how your Untamed is drilled and where on the lanes you play with it.  From this, it'll give me a good idea as to how much hook you throw and I'll be able to let you know which ball fits in where.

Haven't had a chance to throw my FreakaZoid more, will try Monday and report back.

hi,
the interesting thing about the animal is not high or low loaded,
it is the size of the particle. mega-fang surface means the particles are round about 7x larger than normal particles.
( i hope you know what i mean becuase my english is not very good )

Hey Wolfcastle,

Interesting info but they're not larger then the orignial Tec is it(about 10-12 in micron rating)?  Those were pretty big.  Just curious if you knew, thanks.

Rick,

My Untamed is drilled pin under ring, cg kicked out to the right, MB on the right side of the thumb, and small weight hole a little bit further right of the MB. I get my best look playing straight up the boards (I've played anywhere from straight up 12 to straight up 3), although when the conditions allow for it, I can play a small swing and have relative success. Based on this information, feel free to help me out with the rest of my arsenal.

Thanks,
Brandon

Hey Brambo,

Sorry for the delay but I wanted to test a couple of balls before I responded.  Here's what I recommend now...

For the heavier oil, I'd go with the Animal or Rule.  Under the Untamed, as much as I like the FreakaZoid, the Sheer would fill in the gap better above the Slay/R.  Hope this helps and feel free to pm me if you have any other questions, thanks.
