I summon help from the track gurus...
« on: June 21, 2005, 12:35:48 PM »
My sister is looking for a new ball, mainly track, and is taking suggestions. She is more of a stroker type but can swing the ball when needed.  She has a slower ball speed 14-15mph and is looking for something to cover a little more oil.  She is currently throwing a Rule, Xception, and a power groove.  Both of her track balls are laid out pin over ring, mb next to thumb.  She uses her Xception most of the time, but brings out the Rule when carrydown sets in, but sometimes that gets squirty.  Our proshop guy, a track staffer, suggested either the Blue Heat or the Xception 5.0 and she asked my opinion on the matter.  So now I ask you guys, which ball would be better suited for what she already has, the Blue Heat or X5.0?

Dan,

How much more oil is she looking to cover than what the Rule will already give her?

Carl, I haven't been able to watch her bowl a lot lately, but from what she is saying when the track area dries up and she has to move deeper, the Xception won't make the turn and the Rule will turn from the deeper line but doesn't have the pop for her to carry the 7(female lefty, does she have it any better?).  She has told me recently that she has been struggling in her sport shot league this summer which uses a variety of patterns including PBA shots and past and present ABC tournament shots.  She didn't say what she was doing wrong on these shots, but I would imagine something like symmetrical Blue Heat would be better than the X5.0, but I know the X5.0 will have more pop on the backend.

D Pat, she definately likes the Xception and she sure does make it look good during her JBT tournaments.

D Pat, thats what I was thinking, and she has Junior Gold coming up in a few weeks and I'm sure she'd like a new toy to bring along.  Either way, she is going to be getting a good ball, I just wished she knew more of what she wanted out it.  She can hit a mark that you tell her to on the lanes, but she does not have much of a grasp on the technical side of things.

Dan,

When she moves right, is she moving her line to keep the ball in the oil longer, and then encounters carrydown?

Carl, yes when she moves, she moves her feet and her target on the lane to the right.  I know a lot of the time that she leaves the 7 its because she pushed it too far right.  Most of the carrydown she encounters is the stuff she created so I'm sure when the ball struggles back its because she got it too far right.

Dan,

I would think she has a few options, the ones I think are best would be either the 5.0 or the GP2. The GP2 will allow her to move right, but if she leaks it left into the track area it may not recover well off of the dry. If she keeps it in tight, in the oil, then that would be her best option.

The other option being the 5.0. It will recover better of she leaks it into the dry than the GP2 would. I love the 5.0 for carrydown, but as D Pat mentioned it may need a surface adjustment.

I was kind of thinking the GP2 as well as she doesn't really have an oil ball and I know that would cut through the soup well.  She really likes the look of the Xception and I've heard the 5.0 compliments it well.

Dan,

I have not tried, but I wan't to.......adjust the surface on a 5.0 and see what it will do. My thoughts is that it will handle its share of oil of the surface prep is adjusted for it. I want to try a couple different layouts and surface preps on the 5.0.
The GP2 needs oil, no question, no doubt.....if she needs recovery playing in an area with oil, that is her best bet.

Carl, I tell her about the GP2 tomorrow and have her talk to our driller about it.  I know he and several other guys in town love their GP2s and I think it could work well for her.  I'll tell her about dropping the surface of the 5.0 and see what he thinks of that too.  Either way I know she will be getting a solid ball that will work wonders for her.  Carl thanks for all of the help.

I scuffed the surface on one of my 5.0s and it was earlier with a little less backend, and overall still a few boards weaker than my GP2 which was drilled similar to it.

Both balls sound like they would fit, however, the surface change may be necessary as already mentioned!

Hey Dan,

I'd say the following 3 balls fit the bill for her pretty well, GP2, Blue Heat and 5.0.  The GP2 will definitely be her strongest ball and not see any lite hang or the carrydown.  You can also manipulate this surface to whatever is needed and still have it be very responsive.

The Blue Heat is also pretty strong for it's class and the 5.0 will be the longest of he 3 with a very good backend reaction also.  It so happens I just matched these 3 balls up last nite to get more data for my reviews.  Hope this helps some....

Clint and Rick, thanks for chiming in.  I gave her several suggestions and I'm sure she will go talk with Adam soon and see what he says.  Again, thanks for all the help guys.
