gp2 drilling...need some help
« on: June 06, 2005, 12:58:15 PM »
hello all,
i have been reading the boards on this site for about 2 months and am very impressed. I used information on these boards to select my new ball (GP2). i don't crank it and the league i am in puts a decent amount of oil down and my ball (icon 2) won't do all that much. i wanted something made for heavy oil so i opted for the gp2. I still have a track ball (can't remember the name, it is purple and  from 1994). when the lanes are burnt i use it. The ball still hits like a mack truck. I love the way track balls hit, but wasn't a fan of their surfaces 1o years ago. I am looking forward to my new experience with track. anyway, i am looking for some info on drilling. The proshop i got it as is a brunswick shop so i am a little concerned that he may not be ontop of any intricacies of track asymmetrical balls. He is a great bowler, but uses mostly brunswick. I had read on a post somewhere here that are some tricks drilling the track balls. I don't crank it so i can use all the help i can get. I have trouble staying under the ball so that is part of my problem and I am dropping down to 15#. most of my balls have the pin right under or above my ring finger (right handed). Is there anything special i should ask for when he punches my ball up Wed. night before my league? gee that is long. sorry...

Hey feadog,

If you can get a little more specific about your game, it would help.  Can you get your ball driller to find your positive axis point (pap)?  This info would be a great help to us in choosing a layout for you, thanks.

rick,
i'll do my best. If i had to pick a pro who has the most similar game i would say Mika. My track is probably about an inch from my thumb hole. What should I look at to find my PAP? I can take a pic of my most current ball tonight and try to post it and that may help. Thank you for the advice.

Your PAP can be found pretty easily with an Armadillo and an experienced shop person. It is very important to know your PAP when drilling an asymmetrical ball. If you blindly drill it, it can turn out not how you want to.

Hey Bill,

The best way to find your pap is to have your ball driller do it.  Hopefully he has the tools (armadillo) to do this much faster and easier.  If you can post a pic, that wouldn't hurt either.  However, the pap would supply us with better info of how you roll the ball.

Do you also have Mika's revolutions?  Please provide as much info as possible, thanks.

I would say I am at or just a hair under Mika's revs since im sure he's playing on more oil than a wet house shot, but my line is similar to what i have seen him play. I will take a pic of a ball tonight. One piece of info I hadn't mentioned was that i have a small span. I can give some remedial measurements of my ball tonight, but when I talked to my pro shop and I asked him about pins he suggested a pin around 2" from the CG i think? Does that sound right? He said he has a large span so he gets a pin that is further away. Is there a good website to check out for in depth explanations on all of the technical stuff? In the past i would go to my pro shop tell them what i wanted and they would drill it up, so i never knew what PAP and MB were until i started reading this site. I haven't been able to find a good site that explains the technical aspect of ball drilling in terms that a novice would understand. Maybe I'll just have to order my next ball from one of you guys and send you my specs that way I know it's done right! It seems alot of the members are from the Mid West. I live in Southern New Jersey just outside of Philadelphia. Anyone have experience with a good pro shop in that area? Thanks to all that are helping out. I am just worried that after spending $200 i will have a great ball that is drilled wrong. I know it's happened to others in the past on this site.

Hey fea,

I'll send my definition(s) thru a pm.  They're fairly lengthy and I don't want to bore all the guys who already have read it before, thanks.

Here are some pics of my current ball. With the ball color being so dark the pics are kind of difficult to read. I hope this may help a little bit. There is a weight hole on the right. I'd say it is about 1/2" diameter. The track as you can see is roughly 1" to the left of the thumbhole to right over the end of the N in icon.

Rick,

I just wanted to make a public post thanking you for the insight on ball drilling and tips moving forward to improve my game. You are definately a benefit to the track team if for no other reason it is more comforting to the consumer knowing that if you need help or advice on track equipment there are several staffers available and willing to provide any assistance they can. I have been pretty faithful to columbia and track for years and look forward to stepping my game up and reloading my arsenal with the new line of equipment. I was going to take a pic of my Critical Mass circa 1994. I love that ball.

You're very welcome Feadog, for every person I help, Brian gives me an extra piece of chicken at dinner time.

Seriously, Del went thru and hand picked many of us in the beginning to support him and his ideology.  I consider myself lucky to be a representative of his products and teachings as well as having a ton of knowledge that Brian has passed onto me.  It all starts from the top...thank "you" for your interests in Track.  I will always be here to help the best I can.......
