GP2 review
« on: December 28, 2004, 06:51:09 AM »
This will be a long mini review of two GP2s.

First one drilled 6 by 4 1/2 pin above middle finger and a hole at 3 1/2 inches. I compared it to a Rule drilled 6 by 4 pin above middle finger and a exception drilled 5 3/4 by 4 1/2. Surface prep was Sanded 400 to remove factory finish smoothed to 600 and polished with Clean and Sheen. All balls had the same surface prep.

Lane condition: bowled on two different lanes. One had spotty heads and a large amount of carry down. The other was dry heads with some carry down.

The GP2 is about 6-8 feet earlier than the Rule and out hooks it by about 4 boards at the arrows. On the slicker lane with a lot of carrydown I was playing 25 at the arrows sending it to about 10 and was getting a very good reaction and carry. I threw the Rule and I washed out the first shot. I moved 8 right with my feet and hit 21 and it was flush. I threw several shots and had good reactions with both but the GP2 was consistently about 6 feet earlier and 4 boards stronger. I threw the Exception and I had to play between 19 and 20 to hit the pocket.

Second GP2 is drilled 5 1/2 by 5 pin under middle finger with a small hole at 3 1/2 inches. The cg was off line to the right on both balls about 1 to 2 inches. I compared with a rule drilled 5 1/2 by 4  pin under middle finger and an animal drilled 5 3/4 by 4 pin in middle finger.

GP2 was an arrow stronger than the Rule and about two boards stronger than the Animal on the slick lane. I was playing 27 at the arrows and going to 10 with incredible hit considering the carry down. It started about 8 feet earlier than the Rule and recovered much better. The animal looked good but didn't have the finish of the GP2 and left flat tens from that angle.
On the dry lane I was standing on 50 with my right foot and was playing 27 at the arrows and could not stop striking. I was amazed at the hitting power playing that deep on dry heads and having carrydown. The GP2 reads the middles like the animal and has the finish of the Rule. I decided to move in more and tilt my hand to see what happened. I moved to 60 with my feet and looked at 32 and launched the caps and was shocked at the recovery and hit I got.

I will give another review when i get to play on some head oil.
First impressions are that it reacts like a combination of the Animals midlane roll and the backend of the Rule. The GP2 is not quit as angular as the Rule because it reads the lane earlier but it definatly has more backend than the animal.

I think everyone will be very happy.

Remember that the lane that I was launching caps on was pretty dry and the ball was not designed for that condition.

Even though the lanes were dry it was pretty fun to strike from there.

Nice mini review Mitch. So far it sounds exactly like I have been expecting. The Animal with more recovery and backend. Maybe Rick should lay his out 7 x 7.5. With his ball speed he could stand on 4 and hit strong pocket on lane 1.

Thanks for the info Mitch.

Hey Hi Jack, I understand what you're saying but the average bowling population still can make use of this really well IMHO.  Mitch has 470+ rpms and guys like him and achappy are still the minority in our sport.  I believe Bones or someone else wrote up a thread about how the bowling average was still around 170-180.  These guys "tweeners" are still the majority by far and they can still use more strength as oil desities continue to get thicker and thicker.

I'm reading a Rg of 2.57 in the specs. Due to my style, everything higher than a 2.51 slides past, and longer in order of increasing Rg. I can't quite fathom how the GP2 will turn 6-8 feet earlier than the Rule with a 2.53 increase to 2.57....?

Because the coverstock is much stronger. Coverstock has a lot more to do with a balls reaction than the radius of gyration.

I agree that's a basic concept, and one I've fought with for a long time quite frankly.

Recently, someone on the board told me to always watch the Rg since I have nearly 90% (uh oh, nuts, too early, I always get tilt/rotation confused!!!)

Like watching the stock market, there do seem to be patterns that predict probability. I'm kinda amazed how true it's been since I started watching Rg.

Then of course, we have the obligatory videos that show the Rule ouhooking everything else Track has made since the dawn of time...

Now, my Rule is an embarrassing failure at the moment, although in fairness I'm not yet done tweaking, and have great help from the Track guys here. It's too early to tell. However, I am a good 4-6 feet late turning the Rule with it down to 1000, and at 600 it burns up and hits like mush, still with no turn. The GP2 looks interesting on that basis, but.....

Ah, let's face it, I'll have to try one, right?  It's science, it's learning. Therefore, I don't want it, I NEED it.

Try 800, if that doesn't react the way you want, put some Clean and Sheen over the 600.  Let me know how this works out, thanks.
