Finally got me a rule
« on: December 19, 2004, 10:47:16 PM »
Hey fellas I finally snagged me a rule. Now I have to figure out how I want to drill it. Right now it is stacked to the right of the fingers down about a inch or two with the cg right under it. But it has the mb or rev hammer or whatever to the left of the thumb. Do you think this drill will suffice or should i just redrill it totally. And if redrilled what do you think would be the best drill for this ball.

lil,

I am glad that you got the Rule, VERY good ball. I would redrill it though, because the MB left of the thumb is more of a control position, and that is usually not what people was the Rule for.

Ofcourse this really depends on your game and the lane conditions you wish to use it on.

I spoke with my proshop guy yesterday and he said that the drill should work for my style of bowling so I will just throw it today and see. If I dont like what I see then I will totally redrill the whole thing. It seems to be stacked but to the right and below the fingers.

Hey lilphyzx,

Just as Ex stated, placing the mb left of thumb is the control drill for any strong mass bias ball.  If you crank or turn the ball fairly hard or don't want the ball to hook a lot, then this pattern should work okay.  You're probably doing the best thing though, just try it and see what reaction you get.  If you want more hook or a stronger reaction from it, get back to us and we'll help you out with a layout.  Thanks...

Hey fellas I threw the rule a few times, one on synthetic and the other on wood. The first game the ball moved pretty descent. Up ten it stormed through the pocket but I had to give it a little swing because it was jumping through the headpin. As the games progressed it started moving too much. I shot 229 with it first game, and first time throwing it. The next time I threw it was on the wood and there wasnt alot of oil out there. It was too strong for ten and swinging it, it didnt seem to react correctly. I assume it was burning up or something. I cant wait to throw it on a heavier shot to see how it will react on wood but I like it so far. Even with the rev hammer left of the thumb it seems to move pretty descent. I dont do a whole lot of cranking the ball, but im told im some what of a spinner a little bit, but not that much, my ball driller says I figure eight the ball in my backswing if you guys know what that means. Now that is only when I have my wrist cupped. I also threw the ball with my hand flat and it moved pretty good. So we will see.

My Rule was drilled very similar to yours.  Pin under bridge with mb left of thumb.  It took all of 3 frames to determine I honestly didn't like the reaction.    In my mind, I thought the ball would yield a non-overly-aggressive arc (OOB condition) but it did less than that!  The arc was 'lazy' and that's no stretch of the imagination.  The ball literally looked as though it was 'countersteering'.  It was fighting itself!   wanting to 'straighten up' way too soon.  I throw with a decent amount of revs @ 15-17 mph (Qubica rated speed), so obviously something had to be done.

After chatting with Rick (aka tenpinspro) for a while, I had it redrilled.  Pin right of ring finger, mb right of thumb, x hole a hair above midline (I'm righthanded).  Difference is drastic to say the least!!!  What looked like a plastic ball, now moved like something posessed!  I rarely encounter flooded lanes where I bowl and thought this type of layout would cause problem, but it didn't!  The ball clears and reads very well.  The move is continuous as well.

Better to drill agressive and alter the cover than drill very weak and try to compensate by putting 'more' on the ball (IMO of course).  Great ball!

Now on to the GP2 ... *evil grin*

Is it normal for the rule not to really move, if there isnt enough oil down for it. I threw mine up ten and it didnt really move much, my blazin and recharge had more backend than it. I assumed it was burning up but im not sure. It moved a bit more when I threw it up five. Has anyone else experienced this. I also still have it in its OOB cover.

Your problem seems similar to 3 of the guys on my team who picked up the Rule.
Sounds like it is burning up early with no oil. All of my guys have said the ball quit hooking after only a few games.

I may have to put it in the tournament bag with the animal. Though I would be able to use it more though. I threw it on synthetic before I did wood and it moved alot better. So it may be that the ball is burning up.
