I Felt Better About Myself After Hearing This...
« on: January 16, 2006, 03:00:58 PM »
Hey FASTTRACKERS,

I was bowling our monthly skins tournament at the house I work for and although I didn't take any money home, I felt better about myself after what happened during the tournament taking place. Back in early October I took over head coaching duties for my house's Youth program. We started off with 6 teams and have grown to 10 teams over the Christmas break, which I believe is spectacular. Some of the kids I coach came down on Sunday to practice and seen me bowling. What was really cool, despite not winning any money I had all those kids come up to me afterwards and say "Coach Mike" (yeah I know, it sounds corny, but hey...its cool to me), "You know what makes you so good?" and I responded back by asking, "What?" the kids replied, "We have been watching everybody bowling in this tournament against you and every time they go up there and leave any amount of pins, they start cussing and kicking the ball return and punching the chairs...yet, you throw a bad shot and you are calm as ever!"

I have to say honestly, that one comment made my day, and it meant more to me than winning any amount of money in the world. I have to say, my new found faith in the Lord is working wonderfully in my life. I just wanted to share that story with you because it made me feel great to know that those kids appreciate what kind of character you are! God Bless you all and have a great week!

Michael,

That is awesome.  There are alot of people in this world who try to look for money as a key to their happiness.  It is good to see that someone has looked elsewhere and it happens to be the best place one can look.  Good for you.  I am happy for you and I wish you continued success and happiness.

Awesome to hear Michael. The kids you coach will take away more than the gift of bowling through your actions, they will take away the knowledge that being calm even when faced with circumstances that aren't to your liking will make you the best person in life. A lot of times people are surprised by my demeanor on the lanes too- I'm often laughing when I leave 8 pins or 9 pins or a pocket split....I just try my best and move on.

BUMP!!!!!

Now this is what it's all about! So many posts on here are self-centered ("I need this" and "I did this" etc.), and for many people, bowling is a pretty self-centered activity by nature. It's great to hear stories like this! And Mike; thanks for being a role-model, man! Too many bowlers get sooo upset while bowling... And they definitely say and do things that don't need to be said or done.

I've also been going through a bit of a spiritual journey recently and have accepted the lord back into my life (something I should have done a while ago, but I was too young and distracted to realize it)... It's FANTASTIC to hear the excitement you have!! Thanks for this post. I hope to read more like this.

I also do not over react, get mad, etc. There is nothing that makes me happier in a match than to have an opponent that gets really furious...

And several people have told my husband that they wish they could be more like me in that way. He challenges them to give it a try.
Some of them have.

Leadership by example. The best way!

Michael,

GREAT story bud. The kids watch....and often pick up our habits. More bowlers and adults in general should be aware of this and set a better example.

Great post.Sharing your faith and more importantly "showing" your faith is a great way to really make a difference in a bowling center, not only with impressionable youth (cause they will listen to you only if you walk the walk...and believe me they watch like a hawk)..but also with your fellow adult bowlers. Several fellow bowlers and I will pray before league, for the bowlers, their salvation, their families, and most of all that we will be a good example and not do anything to damage our walk in Christ. We have seen three men saved and their families now in churches.

Sometimes when we carry a slop shot or even pack a pressure shot we'll say ...." sure glad I didn't miss church Sunday"  or "it sure pays to pray".  We've even chimed in after a fellow bowler shouts "Jesus Christ"..we say "amen brother He's our Lord and Saviour"  You never know what some statements and more importantly your actions can do to influence someone.

Keep on keepin' the faith and congrats for truly making a difference!

                                       God Bless,  Al
