Delta, XCeption, Hexplosion-- Set 'em up for me!
« on: January 05, 2006, 03:35:01 PM »
Well, as a college student on an always limited budget, I'm looking at a 4 ball arsenal presently (one being plastic).

Here's what we have so far.

Hexplosion drilled label -> 1500 grit
XCeption drilled label -> 800 grit

I typically throw 14-16 mph, and am usually on the right side of the lane, not being one to get too deep.  Medium revs I'd say-- maybe a little less-- up the back of the ball.  I think I posted some other stats in my profile.

I just purchased a Rule Delta.  My question for you guys is *with* my two balls (Hexplosion and XCeption) drilled as are-- what drill pattern for the Delta would make most sense as a drilling to cover a fairly wide swath of conditions, and roughly what covers do you think would be effective on the three balls?

I see a fair share of house shots, but I do run into sport tournaments here and there or tougher shots along the way...

I'm assuming you have the exception drilled with the pin about 4 inches from pap and the mb in the track.

If this is the case, I think you should go with something like pin 5 inches from pap, under the fingers, with the mb swung out between your thumb and val. Should be a good all purpose drilling and should fit in nicely with what you have. You can then obviously adjust the surface as needed.

I really like the drill stanski gives...it was very good to me on the Delta. Additionally, you may need to see how high you track to put the pin under the fingers....you don't want to thump the ball...the higher you track, the more chance you will thump with the pin under the fingers.

As for the surface, leave them how they are from the factory...they are that way for a reason, and in my opinion, they would be best for you like so.

Before I can suggest a layout for the Delta, you have both the Hexplosion and Xception drilled label.......ok. Where is the pin in relation to your PAP on both balls? One the Xception where is the MB located in comparison to your PAP?

The suggestion that the others have offered so far is probably good, but before I can set up an arsenal for you....I need to know more about the layouts.

Since I'm short a digital camera for the duration of winter break...

http://www.balloflightning.com/images/bowling/brlayouts.gif

(Sorry-- I know a bit about layout basics-- but I thought this would be better than "pin over ring" etc.)

I believe the PAP-pin distance ended up being slightly more than 3 3/8" in both cases.

As for surface, the only reason why I didn't keep them in box finish is that I felt they overlapped a bit too much-- if you think I can get a good spread out of the 3 from box finishes then I'll bring them back to their respective grits...

I believe I had a used Freak Out kicking around under my bed somewhere-- you think I could sneak that in somewhere or will it just be overlap (ie should I sell it and find a "toast" ball)

Thanks for the help guys, I hope you all know it's MUCH appreciated!

Any questions or anything that I omitted, just ask.

Hey mrtapped,

How much backend do you want from the Delta1?  With it's stronger mass bias differential, placement is very crucial in achieving the proper or desired reaction.  Let us know and we'll get back to you.

I'm just a little leery about placing the mb on your val because you're describing your track as being inverted and by placing the mb on val, it will end up too close to your pap and that may make the ball roll extremely early which would not offer you a strong enough backend reaction.

Yes I do have an inverted track-- I'd like the ball to have a little kick on the back part of the lane-- but my priority is getting the ball to give me a different reaction (for heavier volumes of oil than the XCeption) than the other two.  I don't want to end up with 3 balls that will work great on a medium house shot, but once the shot differs from that of THS, they fall apart.

No need to worry here.  The natural ball strength of the Delta 1 (cover and core) are way more than the Xecption and Hexplosion.  I would suggest however to keep your layout similar to the Xception (if you like it) or even move the mass bias a tad left for more backend.  Hope this helps...
