Help with an Animal Untamed layout... updated
« on: December 31, 2004, 06:32:40 AM »
I have in my hot little hands a used 14 lb AU with a 4.5 x 5.25 layout (pin and MB from PAP).  Pin is 3" above midline and there is a .75" x 2.5" hole an inch below my proposed PAP.  This is if I leave the thumb alone and just bump the fingers up about 3/8" or so. Most of the relevant stats are in my profile.

I'm currently throwing 15 lbs and have a TPC Player with a similar layout.  I'm hoping this coverstock is a little longer with more backend than the Player.

Any suggestions?  What would this layout do for me, and would it really be a good idea?

J Mac,

If I where you, I would plug the entire ball and put the layout that YOU want on the ball. This way the ball is set up like you want it the first time..

Just my 2 cents..

If they only made a ball that would carry that da_n 7 pin (and I am right handed!!)

Well like I said, I'm open to suggestions.  Already started discussing this with Rick.  Hopefully he'll chime in again.

JMac,

Plugging the entire thing is an option, but if you like that layout in general I would suggest moving the thumb hole. Lowering the pin even more will make the AU pick up its roll sooner, and it does not sound like you want it to do that.

The wonderful thing about the AU is that it responds so well to coverstock changes. With just a light coat of polish it can go from a ball that picks up a strong early roll to a ball that skid flips very well. In speaking to Del about the AU, I recall him mentioning that it was basically designed for a skid/flip reaction.

If you are wondering about the comparison to the Player, most of your difference will be seen with the coverstock prep.....and naturally the fact that the AU is a lb lighter.

Goodluck, and if you have any other questions feel free to message me.

Popped some holes in it finally... shifted the layout leaving the thumb alone and now it's a 4"x5.5" layout with the pin still 3" above the midline.

Used it tonight bowling on a pair that was not even from one lane to the other from open bowling.  I was switching comfortably between a 15 lb. ball and my 14 lb. AU.  I have the AU with a grey pad finish right now and I liked what I was seeing.  I'll keep you folks posted.

Hey Jon,

Sorry I didn't get back to sooner.  Mom's visiting here from Chicago for the holiday and it's been crazy.

The layout you ended up with sounds fine, should be decent length with a good backend reaction.  It shouldn't be overly strong or too conditional, very good piece overall.

I've ended up playing a small swing (15 to about 10) with it so far.  Had to move my feet a couple boards to the right tonight compared to last night, but that was due to a small volume of oil that gets laid down to refresh the pattern before our 5:30 league starts. It still got down the lane, found dry boards and made a powerful move into the pocket.

It may be a pound lighter, but I'm not seeing any leaves that I wouldn't have seen with a similar errant shot with my 15 lb. equipment.

Thanks for all of your suggestions.  I'm pretty sure my first Track ball will not be my last.
