Help with Xception
« on: December 08, 2004, 03:29:57 AM »
I just received an Xception direct from Track and the issue I have is the pin Cg and MB do not line up.  The marked Cg is about 2inches off line if you draw a line through the pin and MB.  My questions are 1) Is the cG mismarked or the mass bias?  2) Assuming the MB is correct does it matter that the cG is not lined up?  3) Drilling for a heavy handed player, I am thinking pin to PAP 5" with pin to MB at around 6" putting the MB directly below the thumb.

I dont know about a drill pattern but as for the cg not being in line with the pin and mb. I dont think it matters on mb equipment. My initial thought is that if the cg is out of line, is the ball a second?? Is there an X after the serial number on the ball. If not, then the ball should be ok to drill, just drill it using the mb and pin.

It is a first quality ball.  Just weird to see a cG this much off.  My plan was to drill off the pin and MB and put in a hole if needed due to the cG position.

Thanks,

I had a CG on a first quality Rule come in about 3.25" off center and after weighing out the ball it was in the correct position.  We even spun the ball and the MB was also in the correct position.  In an assymetric ball the CG really becomes a "weight hole indicator."  The fact that the CG is off center should only be a concern if you have a ending side weight in mind and the CG's locations will hinder it.  In my case the CG ended up slightly negative on my customer's ball so I had to drill the middle finger pretty deep to get the ball to have some positive weight.  Ball worked great too...854 out of the gate!!

So to which side is the CG off center and what kind of top weight do you have?  I would check the CG and MB location, then map out the ball and weigh it utilizing your proposed drilling lines.

It is off line about 2 inches to the right and the bowler is a right hander just may mean a weight hole and maybe deeper (3oz. of top) than planned.  I had planned to fully weigh out the ball before, confirm the cG, and check things as I go.  Thanks for the help.

Jeff...   No problem!  It does sound like a bigger weight hole and I would also consider putting the ring finger deeper to get out some of the side weight.

Jeff,

It is not a blem or second. Sometimes that is how they line up. Simply drill the ball off of the Pin and MB and place a weighthole if needed (more than likely one will be needed).

Hey Jeff,

Exactly as the guys have stated, it's not a blem or second.  As you described this particular ball, some may come a little more drill friendly to a lefty or righty.  Mass bias markings are all pre-spun from factory so they should be true.  I'd be more concerned with companies that didn't do this procedure and just placed mb markers 6 3/4 away which may not really be the actual mass bias of the ball.

Thanks guys.  I knew it really wasn't a blem just wasn't sure if the cG maybe was mismarked.  98% of the mass biased marked balls I have seen (excpet blems) have the pin cG and MB a bit more in line maybe 1" off but not quite this drastic.  I will just weigh it up and drill accordingly.  Thanks again.
