different Switch Grip question
« on: July 03, 2006, 01:35:52 PM »
Howdy fellow Trackers, today I almost seriously injured my thumb due to a slight problem with switch grip, I was practicing and was about to use my boxing glove to shoot at a 4-7, and just before realease the outer sleeve of the switch grip system started to come out of the ball. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it. Thanks

Sounds like the glue broke loose.

My experience has been that Super Glue does not bond as well to polyester as it does to urethane and that may be a contributing factor.  I have known some guys that use Switch Grips to use 5 minute epoxy.  They like it because it forms a stronger bond than super glue and it gives the installer time to make sure the outer sleeve is twisted exactly straight.

Yeah, my pro shop uses epoxy rather than the typical crazy glue and all while I was using them I never once had the outer sleeve slip out.  It is interesing to note however that I sold some of my switch grip stuff, complete with the inner slug and the person that I sold it to somehow broke the Switch grip.  The plastic piece that locks it in cracked, weird.

Was the recommended technique of scuffing the inside of the thumb hole and the outside of the outer sleeve used. This creates more surface area for the glue/epoxy to bond to and must be pretty critical or it wouldn't be mentioned.

We scuffed the outside of the sleeve, been doing that on every sleeve we put in. I have been using my Desert Heat for spares since the ball messed up, and have been getting more spares, so I may not fix the ball yet
