Hey FastTracker33 :o) Ball drillers feel free to join in
« on: December 28, 2006, 01:29:55 PM »
You said if I had any questions to ask so I think im going to take advantage of that Was wondering if you could help me out alittle bit here understanding the basic's about ball layouts. I was always told the that pin below ring finger with cg kicked was agressive. This is how my Machine was drilled and Alot of my equipment. Just recently I have been drilling my own equipment messing around with layouts and have found out that the layout above was a hook-stop type layout. I been drilling my own stuff with pin above or just right of the ring finger and the ball seems to be much stronger and continue alot more. Does this sound right? All my static weights are legal. Can you guys share some tips of certian layouts and what they do for me. I would really appreciate it.

Well i'm not the ball drilling expert myself.. no where close. But i'm pretty sure with the PIN below the ring with the CG kicked will give you an agressive reaction. I think that layout is suited pretty good for heavier amounts of oil too. One thing i think i know is that with the PIN ABOVE will make the ball roll later, and with the PIN BELOW it will make the ball roll earlier. Anyone can correct me if im wrong, im still learning stuff myself

I see. My Machine was laid out pin below ring finger with cg kicked and man I was devistated when it rolled 55 ft. down the lane. I see people throw this ball however and it rolls so nice. I throw acoupel track balls and love um. Just wondering if I should've had the ball laid out different is all.

Actually that should be a stronger layout for the Machine.. where is the Mass Bias located on the ball?

It was right of the thumb I believe. I sold the ball a long time ago. There was a extra hole drilled there as well right of the thumb hole.

Hmmm. Then i'm not to sure on that. The ball should've been strong. I'm not sure what the extra hole was for. Maybe to make the ball legal. I don't think i have anything else to say. Other than the ball should've been strong, and i'm not sure why it wasn't.. maybe someone else will chime in here.

Its all about lane conditions and matching up the ball to the lane condition too.  A pin below with cg kicked out will give you an early roll with a strong move to the pocket.  A pin above with cg kicked will give you a later roll with a big hard snap on the end.

That extra hole was probably the weight hole.  If anything, the placement of that hole could have tamed the reaction down depending on where it was placed.  Check out brunsnick.com for a video on how weight hole placement can affect the reaction of a bowling ball.

Yeah, I was going to say my self, with the pin being below the fungers and closer to PAP(Positive Axis Point), I would say it would be for more control. That drilling there is agressive on some balls, but for a 3 piece assm. ball, it would be more of a control type drilling.

The pin below the fingers also starts the ball earlier in roll. That means that the ball will get more overall hook, but will be smoother on the reaction.

If you have any further questions, just keep them rolling, I will be here .

Hey Jessie,

When drilling any asymmetrical ball with intermediate differentials of .008 or greater, ignore the cg bud (static weight concerns only).  Focus on the pin placement, mb and pin height above mid line.  The Machine has a mb diff of of .025, that's very high.  Because of that, the location of the mb on this ball is even more crucial when trying to lay it out to specific reaction shapes (early roll, mid lane roll or late break).

Ask Rock77, I helped him with his to get his desired reaction...

I noticed you're in Sac, feel free to stop by anytime and I'll help explain in english.  I have a bunch of free standing cores where it becomes much easier to understand with the visual aids.

On edit: I actually helped quite a few people with their Machine layout but Mr Rock shot tre with his...
