hey Rick,Ex, need some advice
« on: September 30, 2004, 05:02:56 PM »
I am setting up my equipment based on the principal of having some equipment that read the midlane with  arcing motion that suares up to the pocket sooner and some equipment that read the lane later and arcs harder.

I may thrown in a few special drillings later on.

so basically 3 balls that read midlane for there oil length and volumes and arc to the pocket. 3 more for backend reaction that charge hard at the break point.

so assuming surfaced to match oil voulumes:

Midlane reads
  • Heavy patterns not to long - Animal 5 x 3 pin 1.5 inch above midline

  • Med patterns - ?

  • Short or light patterns-  Dry heat 5x3

  • Backend reads
  • Heavy patterns  longer patterns -Unleashed - 4x4.5 pin 3: up.

  • Med light - ?

  • Now I have a Rule and an Untamed in my posession. I guessing thinking of drilling the Untamed 5 x 3 pin up for a little more lenght and go with the arc nature of the ball.

now the biggest mystery is what to do with the rule. do I go with a Rule(heavy), unleashed(med) or the the other way around.

what about a 5 x 4 (pin up). will it fit in behind my Unleashed.

or what about 5 x 6 pin up.

here is a test. I'm bowling at palos lanes( rick, rember that place?)
heads are an overlay and the rest wood.

they are using a new oil and it is thicker and slick but man it just goes away quick. last year I could fluff my animal and crush it for three games most of the time. the heads use to go and the midalne held up. now the new oil holds up in the heads but the rest of the lane dries up fast. like halfway in the 1st game.

I also think they are oiling shorter. so how would you setup a strong MB ball for that shot? based on your vids, Rick I would say I have a little less maybe the same on the ball but at least a second more on speed.

Im strongly considering the Rule with the pin up 5 x 6 polished.

so what is it going to be?

    Hey Omega,

I think you already have a great idea and layout to boot.  I'm just going to fill in the blanks...

    quote:
    Midlane reads
Heavy patterns not to long - Animal 5 x 3 pin 1.5 inch above midline

Med patterns - ?  **Untamed 5x3 mb, pin up or finger level(Great fit because of it's natural arc, should read the mids nicely)

Short or light patterns- Dry heat 5x3

    Backend reads

Heavy patterns longer patterns -Unleashed - 4x4.5 pin 3: up.

Med light - ?    **Rule 5x6 mb polished, pin up(should give the great length and strong backend)

I think these patterns with your strong inverted roll should give you exactly what you're looking for.  I wouldn't try and set up a strong mb for the med lite because the lane should be able to grab it for you.  You actually may consider a weak mb (left of thumb) to help push it even further down the lane for a later recovery.  Funny you mentioned the polished Rule cause Ex and I were brain storming on a pattern/surface on this ball for me and this is close to what we came up with.  I wanted one to be just under the one in the vid which I don't want to touch, that one works just great.  Hope this helps....

This feels like old times, what did I drill for you 20 years ago in my first shop, an Angle?..haha.  Is this Palos Hills or Heights? or is that the same, can't remember bud....but I do remember bowling at Fox bowl with Sajec, Jaros and good ole Pancho.

Omega, Rick stole my idea. I was thinking 5x6 before I read his post.

The rule polished gets down the lane very well. SO don't be afraid of this ball for that given condition. Comparing the Rule to the Untamed you are much better off placing the Untamed in the midlane reads area.

I do have one suggestion---not necessarily for your Untamed though, if you like having the pins up in balls for your midlane reads and your desired reaction is more of a strong arc......have you tried a pin IN the ring finger? Great drill for a great midlane read and a strong arc.

    goodluck,

    Thanks guys

Rick, it's Palos Hills. I can't remember what you drilled for me back then, I lucky to remember anything back then.

Ex, as for pin in ring. I drill all my SYmetrical balls like that on the advice of Bill Calhoun. he told me with my roll that that was my ideal pin placement.
I have found that to work well. I have also had good results with track strong MB ball with the pin moved around. I think that is a great 3 or 4 ball layout but since I have room for 6 I want to make a bigger distinction in ball reactions.

I was thinking of pin up with the untamed becuse  of the low rg. I wanted to make sure it had a better chance of clearing the heads. Maybe I will go and try a pin in ring for the Untamed.

I can't wait to try these balls out. I tend to like particle balls better and only have had one or two reactive that I have liked so far. I sure I will like these. see you guy's around.
