How to drill a Machine
« on: February 04, 2007, 06:58:31 PM »
Hi!

I'm about to get me a machine and want to get most out of the ball. I am a hobby bowler and I play mostly THS on league with dry to oily conditions and I want to cover the ball the med-oil side with a very strong backend so I can in the worst play play the ball also on the more dry side of med.

I don't know my PAP but the tracks run next to finger and thumbholes (>0.5 inch to thumb; ~1inch to middlefinger)

But I got a Tsunami that runs really smooth but I also can play it with a more skid-snap style... just how I change my wrist and hand position...

Specs:
15lb 4oz 2.5-3 inch pin 3 top
my style:
13-15mph (not faster)
med revs (stroke/tweener)

here's a pic of my Tsunami:

it has exactly 1 side and 1 fingerweight (15lbs)
a picture of the machine (the sticker is right next to the cg)

So here's my question

How to drill the Machine?
roughly in correlation to the fingerholes?

or in relation to the PAP (I will have it don that way then)?

I took a look at the drillsheet already but can't get enough info out of it.
Remember I don't want the ball to replace my Tsunami but give me another look + be a all-rounder....

Hey Grayson,

Based on the specs and looking at your span, I'd suggest keeping the pin next to ring and place the mass bias slightly right of your thumb (approx. .5-1 inch) right.  This should give you very good length and a strong backend.  If your pin were longer I'd prefer it to be above your ring finger but your span appears to be a little long for that.  Hope this helps some...

How about you let your local pro shop guy, who has probably seen you bowl, decide for you after you explain to him what you want the ball to do in comparison to your other equipment?

you're rubbing salt into my wounds!

There are two drillers in the nearer cities I bowl at... BUT

The one that drills Track stuff is a mere arsehole... the fataass (that he is... and lazy, too) ruined me two balls... one even by drilling my span wrong by 0.2 inches (~0.5cm)...
This guy will never ever drill a ball for me!

The other one also does not take big care about PAP etc but he is very friendly and drills very good... but he never drills Track so he does not know anything about the ball....

So I go and check the numbers to choose the ball and I also ask people and then I go and ask what the ball can do and decide by myself how to drill the ball.
Problem: I don't know my PAP (I will measure it asap) and so the drilling sheet is not much of a help.

Also I still don't play very consistent so I'm still not sure if I ever drill the ball in the next time.

I also been "fired" off the team (not really but I won't play league anymore this year) so I bowl only for my own fun now and so it is more a question wether I really need the new ball and if I can afford it...
I sure want the ball but I am wating to get on of my other balls back from the proshop... (didn't work on oily) if that ball (Carbide+) still is not working I will use it as a doorstop and drill the Machine as aggressive as possible to cover the med-oily...

so I have to do all the work on my own to make sure the Machine won't be "killed" like another was... the lazyguy I wrote first of (the one that drills Track) was so lazy to not even take a single look at the drillsheet and drilled a machine with the BC(MB-locator) on the trackline/-area (friends ball).. he killed the ball the ball is dead - this machine moves less than my XXXL! SO you might understand that I want to make sure I get a good drill layout on that ball! Even if I have to do it all by myself!

And again thanks to all of you for any advice!
