Was thinking the same thing...Just get a cheap power groove for light oil, why a 250$ ball? Hmm I'll never understand...

True, they say it's meant for heavy oil, but with the layout I first had on it, it rolled weaker than my PM, and MM. So I changed things up so I can play down and in if I needed to. Since I didn't have a strong ball/weak drill in my arsenal at the time, I decided to do so with this ball. Thanks to the predictability, I actually have my second highest set with this ball...

Lastly, I didn't pay 250$ for the Phoenix. Not even close actually.

The Phoenix was not meant for heavy oil. They might have meant it to be, but I used mine in Reno and had to take it to 2000 abralon to get it to read. My Mammoth rolled much better and it IS a heavy oil ball.

Keep in mind that the OOB finish on the phoenix was really weak. Your mammoth is at 400 grit OOB. Going from the TCS 1000 COMPOUND or what ever TCS GRIT COMPOUND it is at OOB to a straight 2000 grit or any plane grit will give the phoenix alot more bite. Also you cant just give hook and roll strenght to backend reaction. The phoenix was ment to roll strong in the heads and midlane and strong arc itself to the pocket. The phoenix in regards to the PM and MM was to roll smoother and not snap as hard. This is probly what it was doing but you thought it was week. Also shipper the mammoth is a beast because of its OOB finish and it is also particle my friend, you got to keep that in mind. It is also said to have the highest hook potential of any ball brunswick ever produced.

Hook is what a bowler perceives in movement in my opinion. I have my Big Shot that moves more boards than my Mammoth, but on real oil the Mammoth gets me to the pocket better.

I read all these opinions on the Mammoth as being a beast and a big hooking ball. On oil this ball moves and gets one to the hole which scoring is all about. Not how many boards someone can cross.

Carl told me to put a 4 x 3 1/2(pin under ring) drill on mine, got it drilled up with that pattern and i can tell you this ball moves, and mine isnt a strong arc, its more of a snap on the backends and its one hell of a snap, ive never been able to stand far left and throw the ball out to the 3-5 board and have it come back but i can easily with this ball, hell it goes brooklyn half the time

and scoot, the box finish says TCS 4000

Go to Reno and try that shot and tell me how it went brooklyn. It all depends on the shot and the hand that throws it.

This statement couldn't be more true!!

The Phoenix was a good ball. Extremely smooth throughout the lane. It reminded me alot in reaction of the Ebonite V2 Solid. I think that equipment today is headed in a totally different direction. Highend must also mean "hightech".

i dont have alot of hand at all, your 270 revs is probably well above me actually, hell my track goes between my fingers and thumb most of the time, which i am told is the sign of a "full roller"

and i know it wont go brooklyn there, i know there is more oil there than the house shot i was talking about, but i was just saying the ball hooked quite a bit on the backend

Well, my rev rate is a bit higher, and it still didn't do what I intended it on doing. However I did find another purpose for it. Shooting 780 after the change was enough to show me it was a good decision.

I am in no way saying that hook is what I say it is. I am also not saying that the more you can hook the ball helps you score. When I said the Mammoth is said to have the highest hook potential out of any brunswick ball made, that came from the brunswick rep at a seminar I attended with Carl. IMO hook is the amount a ball hooks through out the lane. I also belive you when you say the big shot can move more then the Mammoth, given the backend are fresher and there isnt that much oil in the heads. I never intended to start anything. I was only saying that the judgement made about the Phoenix rolling weak can not be taken in truth because of the way the cover is placed OOB. The way the cover was OOB made it seam weak to give it some length but the ball itself was a roll early ball. I was also only saying that just because something doesnt backend alot doesnt mean that it is weak.
