Ball is not a lost cause, but is a tough drill. Without knowing the exact top (he could actually figure it out himself on a scale) but he would have to be VERY accurate...but lets say he can't and we just go about it blindly. I would not want to send the cg toward your VAL as if there is LOTS of top, you will never get enough out with a weight hole (extra hole) and the ball will end up illegal...not what you want. BUT, if you lay out the ball like this:
Draw a straight line from the pin through the cg...use that as the centerline for your grip. place the cg in the palm of where your span. This will leave the pin about 3 inches or more above the finger and 5 inches above midline, BUT, the ball will be legal, and with the pin up that high, it will get down the lane well. The mass bias being by the thumb makes the ball more stable as well and will help it get down the lane.
OR....you can place the cg in the center of your span and then rotate the pin to wherever you want it...the closer you get to your VAL, the sooner the ball will react with less backend...it creates earlier roll. By leaving the cg in the center of the palm, the ball will not be illegal.
As a caution though, EVERY comapny has mismarked cgs....not saying this is one, but by finding the true cg before drilling, it may help you IF it happens to be mismarked......if it ends up a 3 inch pin as the cg is mismarked, then you can drill the ball with more flex available to you....we could move the cg and mass bias around to get a different reaction....
However, if the driller can not determine the true top or true cg (if mismarked) I would say you have to keeop the cg in your palm and then rotate the pin wherever you want it to be...
