I Need A New Ball!!!
« on: March 23, 2005, 07:23:20 PM »
I feel like a dork admitting it but i don't know jack about bowling balls.  When you start talkin pin position and 3" this and mass bias that i get totally lost.  I'm a good bowler (just shy of 190 avg) and can read and adjust to the lanes and all that, but I've been lookin at new balls online for weeks now and I can't make up my mind.  I think its because I don't have a f-in clue what I'm supposed to be lookin for.  I have a very orthodox throw.  Right-handed.  I start my approach slightly left of the center dot and play around the second arrow with a nice arc on the backend.  I use a Track Critical Mass that I've had for at least 8 yrs, could be more than 10 yrs(can't remember when I got it).  I love this ball and am very attached to it but it's on its last leg and is gonna have to retire soon (I might cry).  Anyway, I'm hopin with this info someone can give me some suggestions or at least give me an idea of what specs to look for in a new ball (rg, hook potential, and all that other stuff) I would greatly appreciate it.

If you want to stay with Track, I suggest:

Heat (re-released)
Crunch Time
Freak-a-Zoid

Depending on your game, your ball driller should get a ball laid out that will fit your style (speed, revs, tilt, PAP) and allow you to play the lanes similar to your Critical Mass except with the extra hitting power/carry of a new ball. Talk to your local pro shop and they can get you setup.

The Slash is also an option, but what exactly are you looking for....something with a similar motion as the Critical Mass original, or something that will hook more for you (although most balls today will outhook the Critical Mass, due to core technology and advances in coverstocks)

Call Shamrock Bowl in Dublin, GA; ask for Woody. He has a Critical Mass Special Edition. (478) 272-2477

kick12x,

RG gives indication as to how well the ball will get down the lane. This is normally the situation, but some balls have a very strong cover over a core with a high RG. High RG numbers usually mean the ball will get down the lane well, lower RG numbers indicate that the core will want to reb up quickly. Just remember.....coverstock is going to play a huge part here.

Hook potential: This is just as it states, how much potential the ball has to hook. You would want to look and see what the company suggests the ball to be (heavy oil, medium oil, light oil etc...).

Diff: This number indicates the difference between the ball's high RG and low RG. Usually the higher the Differential the more flare potential.

I hope this helps,

Hey kick12x,

Welcome to the Track forum, we have a great bunch of knowledgeable and friendly guys here which are always willing to help.

The 3 balls I'd suggest for you to choose from are the Slash, Heat and Freakazoid which have also been recommended.  These 3 sit in our medium range for performance which will basically allow you to cover most average house conditions.  From there, you can always choose to go to more or less hook dependent upon your needs.  Hope this helps...

On edit: Here's a link to some very helpful info accumulated from the guys here on BR.  http://home.mchsi.com/~s-cross-7-28-71/FAQ.htm
