Versatile drill for CRUNCH
« on: March 02, 2004, 10:14:18 PM »
I have one that is #15.02oz 2.75 pin 2-1/2 top. I am looking for a generic layout for this ball that will cover alot of conditions/patterns. I have been trying to sell it but nobody wants it so I am going to drill it my self. I want to free up some space in my bags and want this one to replace a few ball I carry currently. I carry @ the moment a 4 ball roller and two ball tote. the tote stays in the car unless I have run out of options with the other three in my bag. In the bags are inferno, thing, gold nugget, hammer truck, sonic x solid. The nugget is drilled 5-1/2x75 degrees the rest are in my profile. I have these other fine balls that I realy havent used at all and was trying to think what would be the best combination out of all of them also.

1.Super Carbide Bomb either skids to much or hooks to much real inconsistant and a non factor in my arsenal.
2.Major Assault good ball just a little to much hook @ times.
3.EMB X/F Love this ball on synthetics and carry down just dont see synthetics much.
4.Trauma ER 5-1/2 pin high 60 degrees layout reacts o.k a little to much backend on shorter patterns.
5.Trauma ER 4-1/4x0 degrees pin low  good midlane and great backend read.
6.Carbide Bomb Solid green 4-1/2x75 pin even good ball on fresh backends just getting wore out so I had to quit using it.
7.Crunch Time 5-1/2x60 pin high no games on this one yet so I have no idea how it reacts.
8.Anomaly 4x75 pin low just to strong and havent found a good use for it yet.

Thats about it that I have drilled. I was looking these over and noticed that most are cg out drills and maybe I am needing something like a 4x105 or so just to see what it will do. I never have been happy with lable drills but I am willing to give it a shot if it will be versatile. What Should I do.

Anyone...............Anyone.......... bueller?  Some one would have to have some sort of an idea. I drilled one for my buddy 5x90 pin high cg was close to grip center. I threw his a few times and liked the backend but I didnt like the length/flip I got from it.

For a ball to cover a wide variety of conditions for me, it must not hook too early, have good midlane read and a medium backend.  I then can tweak the release to fill in the other spots.  I've had a Crunch now for 3 months and it's by far the most versatile ball for me. Mine's drilled pin low 4.75x45* with an extra hole on the axis.  It's box surface with Clean N' Sheen.  Several reasons why it's versatile:

a) Resin cover with compound finish provides enough length without being squirty
b) Pin below fingers shortens core so it reads the mids and also not too violent off the pattern
c) Medium pin distance provides enough flare to open up the backend without being too over/under.  Responds well to hand changes.
d) 45* angle with XH on axis stabilizes the ball through the fronts but provides a strong read and arc but can flip if the axis rotation is high enough.

I seem to be able to play so many conditions with this ball and layout. 3 different sport patterns, different house shots, and different surfaces.  My wife has a Threat and Crunch drilled the same and they have been extremely versatile for her too.  She's used both pretty much exclusively the past 4 months.
