How could I go about restoring the factory OOB surface to a Track Machine? I know the coverstock is Fang LS, but unsure as to whether this is actually a particle/pearl, and the best or closest options to get this back to factory finish.

The factory surface on that ball is listed as a compound finish.

That was usually sanded to 600 and the polished with rubbing compound.

I think that you could also try taking it to 2000 or 4000 Abralon with no polish and it would perform very close to the same.

The finish, on the Machine was 1000 compound. The best way to get this would be to take the ball to 400 and then go over it with with clean n sheen. That is the product that would get you as close to box as you can. The Machine was a particle Pearl. He is a list of the type of covers that were on the Domestic robo core balls, along with what type and there out of box prep.

Robo Rule - Light Load Version of GP2 - OOB Grit 800
Machine- Fang LS - OOB Grit 1000 compound
Mean Machine - Fang LS Control - 1500 smooth
Power Machine - Vector SF - TCS 3000 polished (3000 grit T-pad with polish)

Thanks mpwebber and CG-PROSHOP-SCOOT for your replies! I thought I had heard that it was a particle-pearl, but wasn't sure. Also gotta give a big THANKS to charlest(Jeff), as he concurred with your assessments through a PM. He also gave some tips as to which pads/grits to use before the Clean-N-Sheen.... after a nice hot-water bath, of course. Again, many thanks!

I have a MAchine as well which got shiny over time and reacts not as strong as I want to... I found the best for me to be 1000 dull - 2000 dull... but I am open for all info!

I have the Trizact pad. It is P3000 grit. It would fit between the Abralon P2000 and P4000 grit. I think originally Track/Columbia finished a couple of balls to this "3000" grit level, but I think I recall their using a used 2000 grit Abralon pad to get to that 3000 finish. Those 3000 grit Trizact pads are on the expensive side. Besides, darn few people will be able to tell the difference between a used 2000 grit and 3000 grit. That's a pretty fine line. Between 2000 and 4000 Abralon, yes.

HOWEVER, if you must have a P3000 sanding disc, Valentino makes them.

I have tried their P1000 pad and it works great. Since they have the full range, you can get those and cover all the grits that Scotch-Brite and Abralon pads cover. They even have the foam backing that holds water and helps it to conform to the round shape of the ball. They fit in a CAB if you have one.

Sand it to about 800 grit US, with a light grey Scotch-Brite pad (You can also start off with 600 grit, a green pad, but it is not necessary). Then use Track's Clean and Sheen on it to get to the "compound polish" stage. The final appearance is halfway between a matte finish and a medium-gloss polish. You'll look at it and wonder, "Is it dull or polished?" It is also called a 1000 grit (US) polish). You can also approximate it with either a 2000 grit Abralon or a 4000 grit Abralon, depending on your release and the final ball reaction you want. Personally, I find the Clean and Sheen reaction better than either Abralon finish on most balls.

The only thing I have to say is, I myself like to use the 600 before the compound only because it is so hard to get a consistant even pressure when use of a spinner. This is why I myself dont use the spinner for even compound anymore. However that is just me, I would recomend seeing a proshop unless you have the stuff to do it yourself.
