Based on your description, with the pin closer to the mid finger, the block is now sitting slightly on the negative side of the ball. This creates quite a bit of length which is fine but add oil (more length) to that scenario and it is delaying even more not allowing the ball to create enough friction to flare back downward as it does on the drier condition. Now add the fact the Desert is also a lowering flaring ball, your track is not going to flare or move as fast downward as other higher flaring equipment typically will.
Pin above mid drillings are very sensitive, not every bowler can utilize this type of drill (high trackers in general). If possible (if you have enough side weight), you may be able to drill a weight hole to help move the bowtie off your thumb. Achappy had to have this done when he utilized this type of drilling as well. Hope this helps explain some...
