Havoc
« on: December 14, 2005, 10:01:51 AM »
I just picked up a Havoc for a great price. I don't have a solid resin ball and always wanted a black Nighthawk. I've heard different stories that either the core densities were changed a bit, or that the cover was changed some. When it was released (I believe during the Columbia/Track "merger") I heard that it had an original Superflex cover. Others said it was modified, perhaps enhanced Superflex. Track's site says it has Power Plus.

Anyone know for sure if or how the core densities were changed and how Power Plus compares to Superflex? I have a drilling in mind based on my favorite Nighthawk M2 layout, but any major differences between a Nighthawk/Havoc might influence my decision.

What I was originally told was it is the same core, but a slightly stronger cover....but I have heard others as well say the densities are slightly different...

Thanks Clint.  Hopefully that is the case.  The Havoc should fit right where I want it.

Anyone else know if or how the core was changed?

Decided to not sweat the details and drilled it up similar to my main Nighthawk M2, about a 4 x 2.  Needed a bigger weighthole to make it legal.  Didn't have ideal lane conditions to test it on.  But I liked the way it rolled.  The same easy length and midlane roll, and a smooth arc on the backend.  Hit was average, but it would have needed 50% more oil for it to shine.  Will be dulling it down to 600-800 to make a tournament gap filler between my Thing and WMB (see profile for their drillings and surface preps if interested).

Strider, sand to 500 Grit with an Abralon Pad and polish with Finesse It II and it will shine with out the "more oil needed".

Thanks for the tip, but I'm not looking to make the ball shine on lighter oil.  Just wanted to test it out with the conditions at hand.  I need a strong resin ball for tournaments.  Something for when my WMB is hooking early, and my Thing skates too long.  The Thing doesn't have a lot of midlane, so sanding the Havoc (instead of the the Thing) makes more sense to me.  Right now, the only league I'm in, my M2 is my oil ball, LOL.  The only ball I've thrown with any success is a weakly drilled Red pin Classic Zone.

I did get to use the Havoc some yesterday.  Was supposed to be the 50' TOC pattern, but ended up with the Masters shot instead.  Had a good luck with several balls in practice.  Started with the Havoc because I got the best angle and carry.  Early over/under made me put it up quick.  Threw a MoRich WMB and made it to qualifying.  The lanes changed a bunch since two more squads burned up the heads.  Lost my first match.  I should have tried something strong near the gutter since no one played there much plus the oil seemed heavier than in the middle.  The 5 minutes of practice started as soon as they announced lane assignments.  Didn't even have my shoes on, so I didn't get much time to fish around.  I'll be better prepared next time.

They put out the 50' TOC shot for the hangover tourney this morning, but didn't feel like getting up.  Wish they would have made it something like 1pm.  Animal early and Havoc late (5 game qualifying) might have made a good combo.  Anyway, I'm happy with the Havoc.  The ball, drilling, and surface prep (600 grit) were a good combination.
