Hey guys, my friend bowl400 and myself have discussed this but I'd like to see your thoughts regarding setting up teams with 5 guys/gals who play relatively the same line so they can open up their own shot or would this not be a good thing?

I'd like your thoughts on this (Coach Jim and Jon) and anyone else who has bowled this event. Would this be a smart move? Thanks...

Rick,

I think the big problem would come when the shot broke down. Everyone would move together causing more frequent adjustments. Then when you factor in where the other team is playing I'm seeing CHAOS! I say blow a hole in the pattern during warm-ups. Just my .02 bro.

That is the key to scoring big...especially if you have a brother/sister team on the pair with you.

I know a couple teams when we were there opened the lanes wide open doing that. They basically threw dull stuff up 5 for 8 minutes of practice and made some very nice bounce room right...

in warm-ups....

either throw highly sanded equipment to the right of intended target lines....or better yet....throw plastic to left or inside intended target lines....don't think your line-up will matter...

option two is the best if you have several different styles/lines on the same team...

When the lanes get tricky is when you have 10 people trying to play 10-different lines. Say you start playing 12 to 7, and one of your teammates is playing 15-7. What happens in the 2nd game when you eventually try playing 15 to 10? Your laydown is now crossing where his started, and you will see more hook when you move left. You combat this when you have everyone playing the same part of the lane. There will be more moves, but you will open the lane up when doing so and the moves will be predictable. You can pretty much bet that if one has to move, you all will have to move when doing this. I disagree with the article in the BJ. This only happens in the team event, and only the truly good TEAMS do so. Not just the good individual bowlers, but the good teams. One guy not following the "plan" can wreck the shot for the others on the pair. Just my opinion. Good luck, its hard getting all 10 to actually follow through on the idea. My team had talked about doing this, along with our crossing team and everyone seemed to be on the same page. Well, half way through warm-up there were guys jumping ship. We still managed to shoot 3000, but I feel we could have had 3200-3300 if everyone had stuck to the plan.

Rick,

While I'd agree with you if it were a heavy oil shot, being that it is really a fairly light oil pattern, I would say this was not a good idea.

When I went there in March, I watched for a day before I bowled. The outside line disappeared as early as the 7th frame of the first game. ABout the 4th/5th frame of the 2nd game of team, I went inside and played the 4th arrow with a VERY light oil ball, the Visionary Green/Blue Centaur. I targetted the 10 board as breakpoint about 40/42 feet down. Very few people played that deep. I was able to stay there through team, singles AND doubles, moving my feet 2 boards depeer thru the 9th game, moving my target 1 board.

Meanwhile I watched people playing that tantalizing outside line, but watching their balls leave splits then washouts, then splits as they changed from stronger balls to combat carrydown then weaker balls to combat drying midlane.

Unless they've changed the amount of oil since I bowled this in March ---
If you guys burn a hole to give you area, it won't last 2 full games, as far as I could see. I'd suggest getting a Heat Blast or a Solution, sanding it to 2000 or 4000 grit or using a Desert Heat lightly sanded and playing normal ABC/USBC deep.

Thank you guys for all the responses. I know of a few very good teams that did this and I wanted to see others opinions. I understand what Jon means by "needing" everyone to be on the same page cause once somebody diverts and starts spreading oil around, it's a whole different story.

Interesting response Charlest, I never saw the outsides get that dry. We had decent oil there but it was just too inconsistent (like usual).

One more question, can you really blow a hole and create a shot that quick or do we just dry up the heads?

i believe that is the point. blow a hole in the pattern, say at 10 board and then play as a normal wet-dry wall, but a little tighter with a weaker ball than you used to plow the path. this month's bowler's journal has several opinions on this method of setting up the shot. if it did not work, i don't think you would have people talking about it. if you had 10 people working together, transitioning the lane together, one would think the shot would hold up better. this of course assumes that the 10 people have similar games and that they can all execute reasonably well. i had my best look in knoxville during doubles and singles when all 4 of us played a similar area. this was true for my friends on the next pair over. we all scored fairly well on the two pairs. however, i believe knoxville was also the last year for amf lanes, which in my opinion are more scoreable anyway due to the softer surface than the brunswick anvilanes. in any case, the hardest part of this finding 10 people with similar games and convincing them to play the same part of the lane. that, i believe, is where the super teams from the midwest have the advantage. not only are they excellent bowlers, they usually attend with large groups allowing for the correct styles to bowl together. and perhaps the biggest thing, they understand the concept of working together for the greater good.

As light as it was, it depends on what you used and how/where you threw it. You could create an area or you could blow a hole in the midlane or the heads. Remeber also that there was a ton of backend on almost every line. But given how light the amount of oil was, the area you created might not last very long.

When I saw what happened on that outside line in a few shifts, it spooked me and I never even tried it. Went right to the 4th arrow. Given my bowling abilities, I shot 1786, after blowing the first game fooling with a different ball (a CrunchTime - too strong!) and then blowing 5 easy spares due to the oil moving around (2 10 pins and 3 6/10s). My shooting 1786 for the 9 games is a testament to how easy the inside shot was/is. Plus the fact that I didn't change ball speeds, release and I hardly changed my line for all 7.5 games.

When I was down in CC I saw the same things you did Rick. The outside, for me, was very spotty in getting a consistent reaction. I played around 5-8 and the best look I got was with my Impulse Zone playing up 7. Now mind you, my best look wasn't what I would throw again if given the chance. I would have moved in with that same Impulse Zone and gone around 4th arrow. I spent all of S/D in around 4th arrow and shot a pair of 600s while struggling to shoot 550 in team. We tried to play together on the outside, but that led to a struggle for me, as I couldn't find a line.
