Looking for a few questions answered
« on: July 05, 2007, 11:52:33 PM »
The Mean Machine:

1) How early does it pick up its roll?

2)How much backend does it have?

3) What conditions is it best suited for? Can it be used on THS and Chameleon, Viper, Scorpion?

4) Where do you place this ball in a Track arsenal?

5) Compared to the Machine, how much more does this ball hook and on what conditions will the MM favor over the Machine?

6) What is the reaction shape difference between these two balls?

Any help will be great!

spinner,

answers:

1- depends on layout, but compared to the Machine it picks up a couple of feet sooner and backends more.
2- With identical layouts and OOB surface preps the Mean will suprise you with how much backend it has. The only Machine with more backend is the Power.
3- Mine had a fairly tame layout and I was still able to use it on the Shark Pattern. So if it can be used on all of those patterns really depends on layout and your style.
4- In MOST Track Arsenals it will be the strongest ball...unless you have an Animal, Rule GP2 or a Rising.
5- Basically described that above.
6- The Machine is smoother overall throughout the lane than the Mean. The Mean picks up its roll sooner and backends more.....so if I had to try to describe it I would say arc/snap.

I just picked one up on a trade and want to try it 2000 polished.anyone have there's set up this way?what reaction did you see, more backend?
my track arsenal for one house this year is:
phenom-1000 abralon-heavy
inertia-2000 abralon-med with carrydown
mean machine-2000 polished-med 3rd game ball inside/out shot
thoughts?

P.S. the inertia has been perfect for me for med oil with carrydown so I don't want to change a thing on this ball.

sorry for steping on you're post spinner.

The Mean at 2000 should still be able to handle more oil compared to the Inertia.  However, dependent upon the puddle in the center (or how deep you get), the Mean is still a piece that offers a good strong backend reaction for the amount of oil it can handle.

I'd say the Machine or our Kinetic may even fit that bill to open up the shot in the latter part of the night even better due to the amount of stored energy these balls capable of.

The Mean Machine:

1) How early does it pick up its roll?

The larger pores on the surface makes the ball like to roll a bit quicker but for some who are on a thicker density or volume of oil, it can go fairly long before turning on the backend.  I've had both looks myself.

2)How much backend does it have?

Again, all dependent upon how much stored energy you can get the ball to retain.

3) What conditions is it best suited for? Can it be used on THS and Chameleon, Viper, Scorpion?

Unfortunately my PBA league didn't come close to matching any of the shots IMHO.  I was standing against the ball return and was able to bring the ball back from 5-6 board on every shot, even on the Shark...not a close read by any means.

4) Where do you place this ball in a Track arsenal?

It still belongs in our med/heavy category.

5) Compared to the Machine, how much more does this ball hook and on what conditions will the MM favor over the Machine?

Approximately anywhere from 5-7 boards for me (may vary per bowler style).  The condition I found that the the Mean shined was on a thicker and heavier condition where the surface didn't read the heads too fast and still transitioned strongly from skid/roll to hook.

In the lighter density oil, it read quickly and lacked the backend finish it had on the heavier oil conditions.  However, dependent upon your style (for any of you reading), you must understand whether you are speed or rev dominant as your results may vary from my personal experience.

6) What is the reaction shape difference between these two balls?

Layout with strong asymmetrical balls (such as these) dictate reaction shape.  This is a trick question in actuality.  I can drill both of these balls to look similar in reaction and at the same time place the mb's in opposite directions to create worlds of separation.

Hope this helps some...

well I tried the mean 1000 polished compared to the inretia sanded.both balls have pin under ring but the mb on the inretia is closer to the thumb.on Brunswick synthetic lanes, med oil with med carrydown the meanie wanted to pick up a little ealier in the mids but did'nt have the backend punch.the inertia went slightly longer but also had a stronger reaction in the backends.
I really liked what I saw from the mean machine so I decided to sand the mean down to 1000 and I polished the inertia.since I have these two I'll try them both how they were intended to be.

Hey six, exactly what I just explained about stored energy.....the Mean needs some pretty heavy oil to retain that energy so it can be released on the backend.

Alot of oil to get it to skid down the lane or a release that will help get it to skid down the lane. Yet this ball is able to backend like no tomarrow when the cover is placed at the right condition, or used on the right amount of oil.

Yep,that's exactly what I saw so figured I wouldn't even try to set it up polished.too bad I won't see real oil until September.

The resin is very strong on the MM, therefore it will definately soak up oil. I cleaned mine heavily after set.

I have had good luck using simple green and 90% rubbing alcohol mixed 50/50.I also use track clean'n dull around the thirty game mark.also the hot water bath works very good too.I've never had a ball die on me yet but I also own a spinner and clean every time I use something.
