Looking for a few questions answered
« on: July 05, 2007, 11:52:33 PM »
The Mean Machine:

1) How early does it pick up its roll?

2)How much backend does it have?

3) What conditions is it best suited for? Can it be used on THS and Chameleon, Viper, Scorpion?

4) Where do you place this ball in a Track arsenal?

5) Compared to the Machine, how much more does this ball hook and on what conditions will the MM favor over the Machine?

6) What is the reaction shape difference between these two balls?

Any help will be great!

I'll answer as best as possible.

1) How early does it pick up its roll?
For the layout that I have on the MM, it picks up earlier than the rest of my current arsenal.

2)How much backend does it have?
Once again, in comparison to the rest of my arsenal, and set at 1000 grit abralon(no polish) has the highest arcing backend.

3) What conditions is it best suited for? Can it be used on THS and Chameleon, Viper, Scorpion?
On a THS, in addition to my release, it has to be on a fresh layout.  Even then, my MM won't last long.  However, on the Shark, Scorpion, and Chameleon I get a great reaction out of it.  The Viper and Cheetah-the MM doesn't roll long enough.

4) Where do you place this ball in a Track arsenal?
THS-9 times out of 10, it won't come out.  Otherwise, it's near the bottom unless it's heavy oil-or on first shift.

5) Compared to the Machine, how much more does this ball hook and on what conditions will the MM favor over the Machine?  Never had the Machine.

6) What is the reaction shape difference between these two balls?
Never had the Machine

Just to clarify, I have speed (16-17 mph), but lower revs.

Which would be a better 3-ball arsenal for house shots and all the PBA patterns?

Mean Machine - heavy (not floods); strong arc
Power Machine - medium/heavy; skid/snap
Arsenal Artillery - medium; strong arc
Solution Power Plus EX - medium/light

Mean Machine- heavy; strong arc
Inertia - medium/heavy; strong arc
Arsenal Artillery - medium; strong arc
Solution Power Plus EX - medium/light; strong arc

Also - will I find much use with the Mean Machine on house shots, or is it generally too strong. Again, I have a higher speed than revs.

Any other thoughts or concerns appreciated!

I really can't provide an answer to this because you have 3 balls I've never thrown myself.

As for the mean machine. Our speed is close, and going by what you say about your revs, it's signifcantly lower than what my revs were before I got hurt.  Without knowing your layout/surface choice on this ball, I would ASSUME that your MM would be okay for you on a THS.

Also, I noticed that you are asking about PBA patterns again.  Sorry for not asking earlier, but are you bowling on these patterns now/soon?  Either way, in case you didn't know, you should check out the PBA experience videos on bowl.com(if I'm not mistaken).  Just another helpful tool.

are you bowling on these patterns now

Actually, no, not this year; I am planning for next summer's PBA Experience.  That's why I want to know if it would be a good idea to NOT buy the Mean Machine just yet because I might find it is too strong for the THS league I am in for the upcoming season.  I don't want to buy a ball that only takes up room in my bag.

But when I DO buy the MM (if I buy the MM), I want to have it as an even step up from the ball a step up from my Artillery so I can cover patterns easier.

I understand.  All I can really say about that is my MM is too strong for a THS, even on a fresh shot.  However, due to the higher oil volumes the PBA patterns present, the same MM did not react as violently.

I have decided!  I will buy the original Machine, and, when needed, the Mean Machine.

Unfortunately my PBA league didn't come close to matching any of the shots IMHO.  I was standing against the ball return and was able to bring the ball back from 5-6 board on every shot, even on the Shark...not a close read by any means.

Rick,

After you recover from the cold you had in APRIL (!?!?!), you need to take some body building courses. 14 lb balls still seem too heavy for you ...

"Standing against the ball return and still coming back from the 5 board?"
Try a polyester ball.

Unfortunately my house still has a 6 wick machine, can't truly reproduce PBA conditions and our head mechanic (who does a great job maintaining our A-2's) does not bowl so I have to help instruct him on patterns and densities required for shots.  We are however hopefully getting a jet spray soon which will make things much better.

As for body building, haha...good one brother...

Hahaahaaaa. Just like what you've suggested about Xcessive_Evil's injury, take it slowly, or else you are gonna get injured. I don't wanna have you to drill a ball with only one arm.
