Lefty210 offers some great advice. I also preach to never score when practicing, this will hopefully allow you to focus more on the true reason you're there.
One other small tip if you're working on a release. Go all the way up to the foul line, back up about 3 feet and do the one step approach method. I've been doing this for my students for about 20 years now and what it allows one to do is to create more feel at the point of release because no other body muscles will be in motion or use which can deter creating the proper feel for replication.
One step: standing upright, let the ball swing, when it hits the top of your backswing, take a step forward and then release. "Feel" of the release is one of the most important factors in replication as it is with shooting a basketball or throwing a curve in baseball. Hope this helps some....
