Title: Matching up important???? Just ask PA!!!
Post by: Rev_O on January 05, 2007, 07:04:14 PM
I got 2 words...

Patrick Allen

Whether it be mental or not, it seems that he's matching up well again. NOW, this is NOT a crack on TRACK. Track has many very good pieces that many people match up well with. Track didn't fit PA's game. I'm sure it's happened to all of us. I had trouble in the past with Brunswick equipment. I did not like the way they rolled, and that affected my confidence and mental game. Just because one guy was knocking down the walls (Wes Malott), does not mean that everyone will that throws the same equipment.

Feel free to chime in with your thoughts/comments.

I agree Rev O! Although i love Track equipment, right now i'm not having very much luck with the new asymmetrics(machine, mean machine). Although they are great pieces of equipment, they seem to be just to sensitive to friction for me on my THS.I haven't had a chance to try them on a heavier oil pattern and can't wait to do this!As Rev O states, some pieces of equipment just won't work well for some people! I hope to be able to find a drill for these balls to allow me to use them on my house shot!

Well, I guess PA just proved how important matching up with your equipment and confidence are. I didn't see the show (yet), but I'll watch it tomorrow.

it also shows how different the regional and national tour patterns are. pa did very well over the summer at the south regional tourneys but not much luck on the national tour.

Great thread.

Unfortunately, I don't merit free balls...

So I'm trying to match up the ones i have with the THS at my local center.  I think I have found that my mid-high RG Aftershock (over 10 years old) with 800 scotchbrite works better than my new fangled Low RG Infinite One; I get good mid-lane read and stronger backend with the Aftershock.  So tonight, I plan to knock the factory finish off the Infinite One a little at a time and see if I can't make this ball more useful for my arsenal.

Don't think I'll make a Patrick Allen size turn-around, but I'll be happy with any improvement!!!

Interesting thread.

As a lefty...except for particles I have an opinion that Columbia stuff is pretty jumpy for me off the break.  (Is it the coverstock? or their polishes?..both columbia or track)  Until I tried their new Jinx(I love that new coverstock.)

My opinion of most Ebonite is as most say...weaker coverstocks with very strong cores seems to make a smoother move off spottier or harsher break points!  Could it be their polishes also...which seem slipprier off the break and not as jumpy or tacky??

One guy seems to having no problem with Tracks stuff...Wes Malott seems to be drilling a lot of his stuff...under MIDDLE finger or over MIDDLE finger.
Did Patrick try this?  For WEs Mallott the stuff looks strong AND smooth.
Drilling?  or his roll?

Anyway...my impression for the pretty strong handed Mr. PS is he likes to attack patterns with a slight dominance of speed over his strong revs.
(I'd like to do that too!...but don't).

Though I bowl with some lefties that do well with track equip they seem to be quite speed dominant and bowling on oil volumes that are maybe slightly heavier(or league oriented patterns).

Again when one watched PA this weekend the impression that the ball was core dominant on the pattern and very smooth off the break was there.

I believe Track equipment is fantastic but both cover heavy and core heavy and maybe a little more suitable for righties on spotty patterns.

Ebonite and Brunsick seem to match up better for lefties(but for different reasons).  Hammer not bad either!

Just impressions of mine...from the left side!

REgards,

Luckylefty
PS note the problems Mike Scroggins had last year when using Track versus his nice outings with Brunswick(note...I believe MIke was not releasing as well with his Track stuff either.  why I don't know).
PPS again...is it the polishes?

Open the door...see what's possible...and just walk right on through...that's how easy success feels..

i owned a track xception and had no luck with it. i gave it to my dad and he loves it. i have never had any success with an asymetric core which it what almost all the "big" companys are useing i now use legends which only use symetrical cores and i have matched up well with them. so if anybody isnt matching well with something try something it wont hurt none.

I haven't matched up well with the newer Track stuff at.  I'm not a big fan of asymetrical balls and with most of the newer stuff being that I have kinda stayed any from Track and switched to Columbia.  I still love Track equipment though.  Equation 2 is one that I am really looking at. But we will see.

I've noticed the same thing. It seems like Track's "High Performance" line doesn't work as well for me as some of their older middle tier equipment that I still have.

Guys, move over and make room for one more in your boat. I've had the same match-up experience problems with Tracks newer Assymetric Balls (Storm also) made the past 18-20 months or so and because of that, I've had to quit throwing Track (Storm too) and look elsewhere to other companies.

I have been silent on this type of thread for some time, but I feel the need to chime in.

Let me start of by saying that PA was not the only left hander that didn't perform in the first half of the season. I find it kind of ironic that the first show after the break there were 2 lefties (considering all of the complaining lefties were doing so far this season).

PA found a shot that matched his game, did the ball make a difference? Maybe. Couch was using Ebonite and he didn't win or even make the championship round. Maybe he should try switching to Track? OR was it just that PA finally performed well? Too many questions to answer.

I do know this much, PA killed regionals throughout the entire summer using the Equation. Did the Equation change? I think it is being manufactured the same.

To comment briefly on the equipment. I am going to say something that here that many people are probably afraid or atleast very hesitant to say: The Equation is very similiar in overall reaction to the "one", maybe even the angular one. Ofcourse the Equation is symmetrical and the one is asymmetrical, but they both clear the heads and midlane with ease and have a strong move off of the dry. The only difference I can think of right now is that I have not heard of a bowler complaining that the Equation has "died".

I am done commenting on this subject. I like PA and I wish him luck. I just happen to disagree with him basically saying one company makes great bowling balls and every other company out there doesn't. That is how I took it, not sure about you folks.

PA is really, really enjoying his decision to change back to Ebonite.  He just went 4-0 in the round of 32 and averaged 243 while doing so.  PBA.com says that the Scorpion pattern is normally medium to low scoring, I guess it's not at Lava Lanes.

Alright, I too am going to chime in.  Let me preface this by saying that I am in no way knocking any of the ball drillers that you are currently using, but the following applies.  This is really going away from the PA discussion, but more towards those of you who are mentioning that the asymmetrics don't match up as well as the symmetrics do to your games.

When laying out a symmetric bowling ball, a 1/4-1/2 inch will not make a whole lot of difference in ball reaction compared to that same distance on an asymmetric.  So, asymmetric balls require MUCH more detail to get the desired reaction out of them.  I have seen some laid out with what I will call an "old school" layout with the pin next to the ring finger and CG in the center of grip without regard to where the mass bias ends up.  Now, if your ball driller is "stacking" the Pin and CG, you cannot be sure where the mass bias will end up.  If the CG is not directly inline with the pin-mass bias it will not be a "stacked" drilling.

Myself, when laying out a bowling ball that is asymmetric I DO NOT pay attention to where the CG is until I am weighing the ball for static weights.  I only pay attention to the Pin and Mass Bias.  I know that there are still too many ball drillers who either refuse to change with the times, or don't know any better and will drill a 2007-high performance asymmetric bowling ball with 1987 2-piece weight block techniques.

Would you take your brand new 2007 multi-port fuel injected dual overhead cam driven car to a mechanic who only liked working with carburetors and distributors?

Long post coming up...

To Cg Proshop Carl:
"Let me start of by saying that PA was not the only left hander that didn't perform in the first half of the season. I find it kind of ironic that the first show after the break there were 2 lefties (considering all of the complaining lefties were doing so far this season)."

There were lefties on the show because they were in Reno.  Every lefty made match play for the firt time this year (except for Chris Hayden who's on a mission to play a certain part of the lane...but that's another story).  Now did everyone switch companies and find a new reaction, no?  Is the National Bowling Stadium's foundation tilted to the right allowing for more consistent hook to the lefty's, yes.  There was a reason 2 lefty's made the show.  Now they do set up the patterns differently at the NBS because of the foundation but any PBA pattern will play easier for the lefty's than the righty's in Reno, basic architecture.

And the lefty's have been "complaining" for several seasons since the switch to the Brunswick oiling machine, in fact many on tour have had issue with the machine (but again; another story).  There is no fault anywhere for how the lanes are playing it's just something the owlers have to adapt to.

To all:
This PA discussion was way to overblown by the PBA and the TV show.  The independent bowlers switch all the time and there really isn't any mention.  I can understand that PA had renewed confidence with the new company but it wasn't the overwhelming story line of the tournament.  We would have barely heard anything about this switch if they hadn't been in Reno right after the break.

I do believe in matching up with different equipment and even companies, but I don't believe in how touchy people get when one company is metioned over another.

I also think the matching up with symmetric v. asymmetric equipment can get alittle muddy as well when people give blanket statements about how they can't use asymmetric cores.  Each type of core has it's place in the reaction scale.  Some reactions you just can't acheive with a symmetric and there are others you can't get with asymmetric.

Granted there are fewer asymmetric balls out there because they are a niche reaction and the sharper breakpoint that the asymmetricals acheive don't fit the eye of what some bowlers want to see on the lanes but that shouldn't mean they are unusable. And at around 15-25% of the overall reaction how influential is the core to one's game?  The coverstock is what's getting you to the pocket the core and drilling is determining your carry.  Certain houses can produce better carry with sym. and some are better with asym. To be a complete bowler one must utilize the right coverstock AND core on the right condition.

Wow, way off topic. Oh well, happy reading.

*backswing

PS: Lanemasters/Ledgends are in a different category...their cover/core matchups are based on a higher rg core system and really strong covers that can produce the snap of assymetrics.  At least thats my take...
