are these 2 balls pretty much the same kind of ball?

No.  They (when drilled correctly) can have the same reaction, but the Mean Machine handles heavier volumes of oil.  I throw an Arsenal Artillery (pin under ring finger, 500 abralon) and it works well on moderately oiled house shots.  (Look at my reviews.)  The Mean Machine does the same thing, but just when you have more oil to deal with.  Get both, they'll make a great combo.
