Mini Review: Sheer Havoc
« on: May 07, 2004, 11:53:17 PM »
OK, so I wanted to try this ball so bad that I couldn't wait until tonight to throw it, so I went in this morning and knocked off a few games.

Drill 3 3/4x 3 1/8, Pin was up, as opposed to down like alot of my stuff is currently drilled.

Lane Condition: 38ft buffed to 44ft, Heavy oil in the middle, tapered out to the gutter. WOOD LANES.

LINE: I had almost any line I wanted with this ball. I could not get much inside of 5th arrow though because I have too much ball speed and not enough hand. It would recover into the pocket, but it would leave a flat 10. If I took a little hand out of it I could play straight down 4 board and still get a good consistant reaction.

REACTION: Definately longer than the Havoc. I left the Sheer in box condition, which I have stated I think looks alot like the 1000 grit compound that the Animal comes in. I did not expect this ball to get the length that it does. It is almost a reactive kind of look. VERY strong on the backend. As with most equipment I throw, I tried different releases  to see what kind of reaction I could get from different areas of the lane. It worked well all over the lane except for when I tried to get too deep.

IMPACT: This ball hits very hard. It keep the pins very low, so low that you can just see the ball drive all of the way to the pit. I would say it is very similiar overall to the Havoc with the way it hits, the Sheer just takes a different angle to get there.

READABILITY: It is still too early to tell how well it will read a lane condition. It did seem to ignore the heads. It is a smooth reaction going down the lane, but when it got the FRESH backends it turned over really hard. BUT...still too soon to tell. I imagine it is going to read the lanes very well just because of how smooth it is.

OVERALL: I agree with TRACK 100% that this ball will make a great compliment to the Havoc. I did not think that would be the case because of the Fang Particle coverstock. They were dead on though. With that coverstock I almost figured that The Sheer Havoc would be VERY STRONG, too strong to fill the area they say it will.  For me, there are just some balls that roll really nice down the lane. This ball is one of them. I also want to add, that for some bowlers, average ball speed (15-17) and average hand, this ball could be an oil ball. Sand the Fang down a bit and I am sure his ball could handle most oil conditions.

Another winner from Track. I will post a final review once I get some more games on it.

I had a chance to throw the Sheer Havoc some more tonight, only this time it was side by side with the rest of my stuff, or some of it rather.

Very nice ball. It does read the lanes really well, smooth rolling.

Thrown side by side with:

-Havoc drilled 3 7/8 pin and 7 1/2 MB: It is still longer than this Havoc, and since the MB on the Havoc is so far from my PAP it is a little less angular. The Havoc was able to play deeper on the lane because of how strong the backend reaction was. In order to get inside deep with the Sheer Havoc I had to slow my ball speed down quite a bit.

-Crunch Time drilled 5 5/8 pin above fingers 5in CG: The CrunchTime was MUCH more angular and went a couple ft further down the lane. In trying to use both of these on the same condition, I had to stand in about the same spot, but the reaction down the lane was very different.

-Retro Ressurection drilled 4 5/8 pin and 4 1/4 CG: They got about the same length. I was suprised with one being resin and one being particle, but the Sheer Havoc had a simliar reaction to the Ressurection----just stronger. The Sheer handled carrydown better, and was able to be kept in the oil longer and still carry the corners.

All in all the Sheer Havoc fits very well into my arsenal. Just throwing it with the 3 listed balls, I know it is a few steps down from my Animal. It is definately a ball that I think could be used by any style of game/bowler.

No problem, I try to give a mini on every ball I get.

Either of those would fit the bill. I really like the Sheer Havoc so far, but I would suggest the Havoc. Because it is stronger than the Sheer and down the road it will be easier to fill the void between the Havoc and the Sonic X. Both of these are versatile. I have not tried the Havoc with polish, but it would just end up delaying the movement.

goodluck

Plus, the Havoc is basically an original Nighthawk.  One of the best balls made IMO.  I don't need one, but I'm tempted to buy 2 to stick in the closet for when they stop making them.  They'll keep my two pearl M2's company.
