Need drill patterns...
« on: November 27, 2004, 02:52:35 AM »
Hello all, I am in need of a couple of drill patterns for 2 new balls. First off, I have a Mutant Mania, Mutant core/Fang Particle cover. I was told to treat this as a regular Mutant as there isnt much difference between the two.
Second of all, I have a Freakazoid. Here is what I have so far for equipment and how it is drilled:

Animal-pin under and right of ring, mb 1.5" right of thumb
Xception-pin over bridge, mb just right of thumb
Untamed-pin below bridge, mb on VAL
Sheer Havoc-pin under ring, cg 2.5" right of grip center
Crunch Time-pin over middle finger, cg in palm
Hex Darkside-pin over bridge, cg under ring

Now here are the specs of the two new balls. Give me drill suggestions and where they would fit in or what they can replace in my current arsenal. The Mutant Mania is 15lbs 4 ozs, 4 3/4 oz tw and a 1.5" pin. The Freakazoid is 15lbs 4 ozs, 4 1/4 oz tw with a 5" pin. I was looking to put the Mutant Mania above the Animal as the mb placement on the Animal isnt really suited for heavy oil. For the MM, I was going to put pin under bridge, mb on VAL. For the Freakazoid, I have no clue so please suggest drill patterns for these and where I can put them in. Thanks in advance.

Rock,

First let me comment on the Mutant Mania: This one should be easy....just try placing the pin a little closer to PAP and in a similiar measurement vertically from your midline that you have on your Animal(maybe only a quarter inch from where it is on the Animal), and kick the MB over to your VAL or slightly beyond your VAL. This should help it get into its roll sooner which is what you are going to want on oil. The only thing that is going to worry me about you drilling this ball with this layout is the high top weight. It may leave your sideweight VERY high after drilling requiring a huge weighthole. Have your pro shop operator explore this possibility before drilling.

NOW...for the Freakazoid: What I did with my first Freakazoid was drill with identical to what I had on my CrunchTime. It reacted close, but the Freakazoid rolls up a little bit sooner. I then drilled one up pretty close to how I had my Sheer Havoc (only I kept the CG a little further left than what I had on the Sheer), and it was very similiar except that I felt the Freakazoid was a little more suited to play on more oil.

What kind of reaction do you feel you are missing from your arsenal that the Freakazoid could help to fill?

You know, I am not missing a specific reaction but feel that the FAZ would fit nicely between my Sheer and CT. I had the CT plugged and redrilled to get longer on the lane plus added some polish to it so now it is kind of skid/flip rather than a strong arc. The Sheer reacts similar to the CT except it starts up about 3 feet earlier. I really only have one "control" ball and that is my Untamed. I would like to get the FAZ to give me control and help me read the lane and possibly be my "go to" ball. Let me know what you think.

Rock,

For control, try something like a 4 inch pin from PAP and shift the CG to the center of your grip. This is a fairly good control layout for most. The only thing you MAY have to do (but do not do so until you have used it a few times) is to take a little bit of the gloss off of the surface. This will help tame the backend down a bit. Once again though, throw it first because you will want to see......the factory finish could be good for control for you and your style.

And this will work even though the ball has a long pin??

Also when you say put the pin 4" from PAP, should the pin end up above or below the fingers?

Rock,

I see the FAZ has a 5" pin and 4 1/4 oz. top weight. I agree with Ex on a good control drilling for the FAZ being a 4" pin to PAP distance label shift but the ball you have is not ideal for this drilling. With the length of your ring finger span (4 3/8) and your PAP of 4 3/8 over and 1/2 down to use this drilling you will need to place the cg over 1" below the middle of your grip and the pin about 3 1/4" above the middle of your grip. To accomplish this you will need to double drill the thumb.

Precision

What is meant by double drilling the thumb??

Hey Mr. Rock,

I think what Precision is saying is that in order to lay this ball out to 4 inches from pap, the placement of your grip is going to have to be shifted so far up (over an inch) from midline that it would create a ton of thumb weight and have to be drilled out to meet ABC specs.  But that's only if we keep the pin in a more upright position from cg.  Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Precision & Ex, what if we did more of a 2-2.5 pin and lay it sideways almost?  About a 2:30 from cg angle, the pin should be near or past val and it would lower the pin distance from midline also, right?  In this position, I'm picturing the cg in or near grip area without having any problem with statics.  Just a thought....

I do not think that Rick's suggestion is a bad idea. Maybe 2.5 inches from PAP, but shift it up a little as well. THEN go as close to grip center as possible.

Ok, now I am really confused. I really dont know what drilling you guys are trying to recommend for me as far as a control drill.

Will the drill that Tenpinspro suggested be a good control drill?? I am trying to imagine how that would look. The cg would be in my grip center and then the pin would be above and way right of the fingers about 2-2.5" from PAP. Is that what that one would look like.

I never realized that a ball with pin out and high top weight would be so difficult to drill. I only picked this one up because I got it really cheap, but now I know why!!

Rock, the only reason the ball is a little harder to drill is you are wanting a go to ball instead of a conditional ball. Normally balls with that much top weight tend to get down the lane better and pop a lot harder on the back. I have drilled several balls with that much top weight and I would suggest putting the pin over your middle finger or over the bridge and swinging the cg about 2 1/2 inches right and having a fairly large hole at 4". You stated that you like the crunch time that is over your middle finger. The freakazoid will read the middle of the lane more than your crunch time and hook a little more. Moving the cg to the right will make the ball read more in the middle and putting the hole at 4" will take more top weight out than if you put the hole further away. Pin above your middle finger will give you good length, cg to the right will give read in the middle of the lane, hole close will get rid of top weight and smooth out backend.

I have one drilled similar but with the pin above the bridge and I love it and strike a lot on the pba patterns with it. I think the pin at 2" would be a waste of such a good ball and would make it limited in what it would do.

I hope this helps.

Hey Rock, (sorry for the confusion)

It's not that the ball is that hard to layout but since half of your stuff is already above bridge, CT already has pin above mid and probably close to about 6~ pin from pap, I was looking to do something completely different.  The layout I'm suggesting will look something like this...

----------------O-----O
------------------------------pin
-------------------cg--
-----------------------
-------------------O---

Not sure why Precision doesn't like the pin past val because it will keep the ball very stable.  I've drilled a few like this for my ny heavier handed guys for control and they worked pretty well.  Let us know if you need more help...

It is very possible and probable to have the thumb area crossing point move up far enough that the ball will flare over the thumb hole.

I knew you were going to say that...lol.  You think even with Rocks inverted track, this would pull it far enough over?  I did this for one of my inverted guys and he didn't but I don't remember the exact specs, may not have been past val so I can't say for sure.
