What is the best Track ball for light/short oil??
« on: August 16, 2004, 12:20:33 AM »
Looking for a short/light oil ball in the current Track line-up.  I would also like to use this ball when the heads are fried and the backends are screaming. What kind of surface preparation would I be able to give this ball as well?

hey Mr. Bear

Dry heat?  Havoc?  Doesnt really matter what ball u get though, ive seen you bowl before and you can handle any condition with any ball!

The Dry Heat is going to be your natural choice. That is going to be the best ball Track has to offer for that kind of situation. With fried heads and screaming backends, the only ball that really may be able to be used on that condition though is plastic or a very polished urethane ball.

Dry heat drilled with an extremely long pin from PAP....like 6 1/2 inch pin from PAP, the surface prep will be important, my suggestion would be to sand the ball with like 3000 grit sandpaper then apply Track's Delayed Reaction.

Oh yeah Mr. Bear, i remember Jason Dee altering the surface of his dry heat to reduce the amount of backend.  He sanded his ball a certain way and it made his dry heat move straighter.

What would really be nice is if you could find an old Track Magic. They handled burned up stuff fairly well where as if it was drilled up weak you could go deep and still keep it from rolling out. Just another option. I think Excaliber has your best bet though.

Hey Ken,

Ex's choice on the Dry Heat is a winner.  It offers the most control on screaming backends IMHO.  I personally always recommend trying a ball OOB first and then tweak it accordingly because it's so difficult to know everyones exact style.

In regards to the surface adjustment, TwoHand834 had pretty good success with his.  If he's still around, maybe he can fill us in on the details.  Hope this helps you some...

Can anyone compare a Dry Heat to the vintage Triton Heat (red pearl cover)? I just picked up one for the dry, and I wonder if it is still too much.

Pick either Dry Heat(out of box) or Havoc(polished)...

Hey PJR,

The Triton Heat s/b stronger unless it is burned out or oil soaked.  Not recommended for dry lanes normally....

Ken,

You have seen my Dry Heat, and it is at the perfect setup for fried heads and screaming backends.  My PAP is 6" 5/8 up, so basically, the pin is above my middle finger and the CG is under my ring finger(6 1/2 x 5 1/2) with a small weight hole 3 1/4" across from my ring finger.

I'll tell you one thing though, most lanes in our area always has carrydown when the heads dry up.  I would suggest a similar drilling like mine, but moving the pin 1/2-3/4" positive so it would give you great length & more bite in the carrydown.

It's what Del Warren calls the "Canadian Stalagmites" lane condition.

Feel free to contact me anytime.

Dabalos, Jason Dee lightly scuffed his dry heat with 1500 grit wetsand to tame the reaction on his Dry Heat.  He puts alot on the ball to make anything go nuts on the lanes.  Surface prep should come after you drill the ball and throw some shots on the condition you want it for.
I would suggest trying the Box surface first on any ball, like Rick has mentioned.

I have read a couple of posts on this saying "havoc polished".......

The Havoc is a strong ball. Much stronger than what can be used on fried heads.

just my opinion

I use either:
An Ebonite Vortex Afterburner
or
Hammer Diesel Reactive Pearl.

The Afterbuner (particle pearl)is drilled for length and backend.
The Diesel is drilled for more control and an arc backend.

Keep looking... I'm sure there's a 300 in one of those balls you keep buying!!
