Most useful high performance ball from Track?
« on: January 22, 2004, 10:58:49 AM »
Given a variety of lane conditions ranging from light mediums to heavy oil, which high performance ball from Track is the most useful for a tweener? Freak? Freak Out? Mutant? Super Freak? Phenom? Phenom Unleashed? Animal?

Hi J,

Sorry, not that easy.  You're asking a football player what kind of cleats he uses from a very muddy field to dry ground(astro turf being dry lanes), what do you think the football player would answer?  A one inch cleat for mud will stick or create too much friction and/or traction on dry ground.  A heavy oil ball will create too much friction on a med condition.  The half inch cleat will slip in mud as a med ball will slide in heavy oil.  I could eliminate almost half the balls in my shop if they made a ball that covered this range.

I'd still have to recommend 2 balls for you.  Based on the numbers, the Animal sounds like a great ball for heavy oil and for the med conditions, I feel a Freak Out would fit in nicely for a tweener.  Hope this info helps and feel free to contact me if you have any further questions, thanks.

Thanks Tenpins,

I appreciate your reply. How come you don't recommend the Unleashed? From what I've seen, that's a ball I could do well with. And you don't seem to be doing too bad with it either.

Hi J,

The Unleashed to me is actually between these 2 balls.  From the original sound of your message, I felt you were trying to limit your arsenal not fill gaps.  So I did for you what I do in the shop, I help customers separate their equipment more to give them a wider range of conditions to cover.  I still have many customers that do not want to carry 4 or 5 balls into league which seems like it is becoming inevitable these days.  However, you are correct.  The Unleashed IS a fantastic ball, I'm ready to drill a second one with a different layout.  I hope this helps....

I'd have to say the Unleashed or the Phenom.  Both are very versatile (including the covers) and can cover a variety of conditions because of how well they get down the lane.  It's tough to pin it down because you say you are a tweener which would suggest going with the more agressive of the two but then you want to cover "light mediums" which suggest the Unleashed.  Too early to say about the Animal.

Thanks guys for the input. I am in fact looking at narrowing down the number of balls I carry to tournaments. I have an Apex Aggression and an Apex Adrenaline. Both are good balls, but I have sort of gotten the idea that a cross of the two would be best for the four ball arsenal. Also, I'd like to try a Track High Performance ball. Sheer curiosity.

I am kind of leaning towards the Unleashed. Could it be to close to the Adrenaline?

FOR ME----the Unleashed is the most useable. I can use it on med conditions and really open up the lane and when there is heavier oil I can slow down and square up with it.

I agree with the FreakOut as well. But not on the heaviest of oil. I loved the FreakOut and it was probably my favorite in the Freak Line. I never tried it dull.

yea, rick's the man!

if i were to choose, me being a surface guy, i would go with an UNLEASHED and a MUTANT...dull, polished, whatever....i could play virtually any condition with these balls and different surfaces.  Remember, playing with the surface always prevails!

im a tweener/powerstroker, so im on the same level as you...but for NIB surfaces, i'd take tenpinspro's advice.

I agree with Excaliber. The Unleashed is my most versatile ball. I just adjust ball speed according to the lane conditions. The more oil, the more I slow it down and it gets to the pocket like a champ.

Thank you guys for the kind words...

J, the Unleashed has a much stronger backend then the Adrenaline.  Keep asking and we'll try to keep answering....just here to help.

Thanks all for replying and feeding me info!

I have test-rolled one Freak Out earlier. It struck me as a very calm ball given the core and the coverstock. Could be due to the fact that the owner had it set uo for early roll. It didn't feel like something to open up the lane with. More like something to use to follow the oil line on mediums. Wrong or right?

So I guess I am looking for something sharper. It's great that the Unleashed has more backend than the Adrenaline. Does this mean that the Unleashed covers more boards than the Adrenaline, or is it just longer?

As for the Mutant. What is the main difference between the Mutant and the Unleashed?

Again, thanks.

I read in the BTM issue that the animal is the most versatile Highend track has produced or something tot hat nature..It will work well on heavyier and mediums and if you have higer ball speed light also..

J, Yes the Unleashed goes longer and covers more boards, especially on the backend.  My Mutant resembles somewhat of a weaker Unleashed.  I guess the main difference would be to say the Unleashed is not as sensitive to a heavier oil line and still has the capability to turn the corner when needed.  For me, stroke turning the Mutant was still not enough to get up on that heavier line.  I have also plugged my Freakout once to play with another pattern and I drilled it very mellow to roll early and yes, it did exactly that, roll even.  However, if you drill it a little stronger, it too can get down the lane and finish with a strong movement in a med oil condition.  A little less then the Mutant but a lot less then the Unleashed.  Hope this info helps....

Tenpins,

Thanks for the comparison and the comments. I think I will get an Unleashed to start with. It seems the closest to what I've in mind.

This site is the best!
