Rest in Peace Desert Heat

I'm sad to say that today my Desert Heat is going to be put to rest. I had bought the ball used, however it only had 2 games on it.  Tuesday I noticed that the Thumb plug was cracking. I took the ball to the proshop the next day to have the crack repaired. The next day a came back and there was a 3-4 inch crack extending from the plug.  The pro shop operator refilled in and told me to comeback tomorrow.

Came back today and another 3-4 inch crack had developed. The pro shop operator told me the bad news.  He is willing to replace the ball, but unfortunately his supplies do not have any more Desert Heat, and the only thing that I can find on the market the even closely resemble the desert heat is the Hammer Tuff and the Ebonite Tornado warning. Not really interested any either of those balls.  He was closing up shop so we didn't come up with a resolution to the matter. But I know he is replacing the ball.  We just have to decide what will be the best option.

Below are the 2 options that we where decussing when we left.

1) Comparing the stats of the ball the closest thing that track has out is the desert heat is the arsenal artillery

DH
RG:   2.57
Diff: 0.020  

AA
RG:   2.45
Diff: 0.046

We were thinking about getting an AA with at least a 4 inch pin and with some where in the area of 4 oz of top weight.  Then sand it up to 2000 or 4000 grit and put a couple coates of polish on it.  Well also where going to set it up with a weak drilling.

Option 2) Take a machine and get the same stats of the AA.  Also we would sand  to the same and polish and drill it the same.  We would also make sure that we put the MB to the left of the thumb hole to help kill the reaction.

Personally I am leaning more towards number 1.  But can you guys give me some feedback on the issue.

No i have not checked ebay yet but the pro shop is actually paying for the replacement not I so he will only buy something from his supplier.  I plan on checking ebay once i get a little extra cash to find a replacement but right now thats not going to happen. Luckly I have an old triton elite pearl that was less aggressive then my Desert heat was so if worst comes to worst I can always use it.
Besides I have been wanting an AR or a Machine for awhile so on the brightside of things I am getting one at no cost to me. I just wish I could have my DH as well.

I actually did look at the Orbit Exteme. Even though it the core is the same is still has a 2.46 rg and a .035 diff.  I actually though about it but went against it.  I know it sounds dumb since amf and track are made by the same company but I wanted another Track to replace my DH.  I love Track equipment, if you check my profile you will see that every ball i own is made by track except for my old trauma er which is unuseable since it is cracking in 2 different directions starting at the pin.  I know right now that they don't have anything that is similar to the DH but hopefully sometime in the future they will or I can pick one up off ebay when I have some extra bank.

At least for me the AMF orbit extreme is nothing like the desert heat. The extreme is 5+ boards stronger at the break with similiar layouts and about 3 feet shorter. In other words, the extreme jumps off the dry compared to the desert heat which has a strong arc, but totally controllable. My orbit extreme is going on ebay this week since it has no place in my bag. Its too damn strong and quite flippy. On another note, a ball that I really like to compare to the DH is the Columbia Scout reactive, it just doesnt quite have the carry, but close. Just my .02

Try a Storm Tropical. It is suprisingly strong, available, relatively cheap, and hits a ton. If not that, then for dry lanes consider the Visionary Slate Blue Gargoyle. A third possibility is the Hammer Vibe.

I will probably just end up getting a new Desert Heat offline.  I have found a few places that still stock them in 15lbs.

There are still alot of Desert Heats on bowling.com - i'd see if he could just give you as full refund of money in cash and buy the ball offline an have him drill it.

I have actually though about doing that.  But he is going to replace the ball with an Arsenal Artillery.  I have wanted an AA for a while now.  Besides the Desert Heat online is cheap than the AA.  Personally I would rather actually pay for the cheaper ball and get the more expensive one free. Besides since it was a used ball that I didn't even buy from him.  He really isn't obligated to replace the bal.  Only reason he is doing so is that he is a close personal friend of mine and I spend alot of money there and refer him as much business as possible.

I pass only thing I throw is Track, and with the recent event and talk of them possibly discontinuing the Track line although because of sales, Track needs all the support that they can get.  Thanks for the suggestion though.

Well maybe not.  The pro shop owner tried to plug the crack once more and this time the cracked stopped. Has about a 1 inch thick plug line for seven inches down the ball. But luckly it is not going to be in my Track.

The superflex in general was always very flippy, especially the pearl. I liked the powerplus with mica on the original TKO. Very smooth and controllable. I wish they would bring that back on their lower end line on say a heat blast core.

I too am looking for a light oil control ball.

I love the coverstocks that they used the MICA in. Some of my favorite ball like the Heat, Elite, and Revmaster all had the Mica in it.  I too wish they would make  another ball with MICA in it
