My Rule-Check Everything
« on: January 03, 2005, 11:36:57 AM »
I had my Rule drilled up in October for a tournament in Reno. I shot a 600 with the ball but I really did not like the reaction. I am one who likes to give a new ball a chance so I brought it back to my home turf. I have leagues in two different houses, one oil in center and dry outside. The other house has lots of oil and oiled across and long length. The Rule just had a mind of it's own
with not much arc and the revs were just not what I was used to. I took the ball
back to the ball driller and weighed the ball on the scales just to re check.
We were both shocked to see what the weights were. 15.1 oz.total weight, 2oz.top
weight,1/2 oz. finger weight and 3/4 side weight. The finger holes were drilled
deeper and a weight hole right in the PAP. This brought the top weight to 1 oz.
1/4 thumb weight and 1/2 oz. side weight. I left the side at 1/2 oz. so I could
go to 3/8 oz.if needed. I do not leave 10 pins in either house so I don't think
I will change a thing. The Rule hits like a truck and nice hard arc and revs are
right where they should be. Without going into a lot of detail the pin is about an inch from the ring finger and at 2 o'clock. The MB in the center of my thumb
on the back edge. I did not make that many surface changes only 800 grit, never
shined up just cleaned with Ultimate Rejuvenator black magic after leagues.
I am sure glad I did not call this ball junk or want to plug and re drill as I have seen on this site in the past. I knew one thing for sure I was old enough, but not smart enough to figure the Rule out after one night. My Rule is smart, it can really read the break point now. I hope this post will help out a couple
of bowlers and I hope I was able to get across, don't give up too quick on what
you want the ball to do.

Great post. Exact example of how minor tweaks can help the performance of a ball. Too many people just give up on a new ball if they don't go right out and shoot big numbers with it. I know it can be discouraging, but nowadays a bowling ball is an investment for some people, and as a stockbroker by day, I have never given up on any investment if the returns are down or are less than expected, you must look at the long term or make minor adjustments to get you where you want to be.

So all you did was remove an oz of top weight, removed the finger weight (actually added a bit of thumb weight), and lowered the amount of side weight?

Can someone explain what positive top, side, finger, and thumb weights do?

Sir Bowl,

It's not the change in static weights that made the difference, but the fact that a) the fingers were drilled deeper, which shortens the core and helps it start up earlier and b) a weight hole was added which also helps it start up earlier.

Hope that helps.

Hey Jody,

A very good and informative post, thank you.  Glad to hear you didn't just give up like many people do without realizing how much can be affected or changed with minor adjustments.  Welcome to BR and the Track forum bud..

Hey Sir Bowl,

Achappy is correct, the stronger influence on the adjustment was most likely due to the shortening of the core by drilling the fingers deeper.  However, by doing this, the positive static weights were also reduced/removed.

Under the umbrella of static weights are the following and their reactions.

Positive statics: pos side, finger and top weight - all make a ball go longer before turning over and have a stronger backend reaction

Negative statics: neg side, thumb and bottom - all make a ball roll sooner and have less backend

Hope this helps explain some...

Rick,
Thanks for the welcome and thanks for helping me out explaining the satic weights. This should help bowlers have a better understanding of what they do.
Even though the static weights are not as important as they used to be because of the core designs and MB placement in today's equipment. Bottom line is the balls just don't really need a lot of extra help to hit the hole.
