My Track drillings. Help
« on: March 25, 2005, 12:14:54 PM »
I need anyone that knows drillings to look at my links and tell me what these 2 balls should do. I cant get my GP2 to hook like it seems everyone on the board does.

Yes the GP2 is drilled to go long and snap.

Rule is drilled to rev eariler and be more smooth and arcy.

Shipper,

I apologize for not getting back to you sooner.

The GP2 seems to be laid out to get down the lane and the MB placement is for more of an angular reaction. It is not a bad layout for this ball, but it is definately not an oil layout.

What kind of reaction are you currently getting out of the Rule? The Rule's layout should get it started up sooner, and the MB placement on that ball is in a position to get it into an earlier roll as well.

I think you should have flipped the drillings.  That would suite each ball for their intended conditions...

Shipper...
I agree with Traumatize on flipping the drillings. I am curious as to where the track is on the two balls. If the track has changed or lower than normal, it could affect the length down the lane even more. I am saying this without us knowing the static weights or how much oil you are up against. When the rest of the Track guys analyze the pictures and ask few more questions, you will have a good idea of why the balls are not working for you.

I have someone drill my stuff that has been drilling around 20 years or so. I like the feel he gives me. But I am not so sure he is up to date on all the new ways to drill. I told him I wanted the GP2 to be my oil ball and this is what we came up with. It does not hook as much as my ACE.

I appreciate all those that have left a reply. I guess my next step is to have the GP2 plugged and get it drilled by someone that really knows the new set ups for balls.

My Rule is polished and it does what I want as a down and in ball. I want a oil hook monster that I keep hearing about. I used to be able to hook the ball back in the old days of lacquer. But it seems I don't have a ball set up properly for any heavy oil in the middle.

Thanks again,
Shipper

Hey Shipper
Before you give up on the GP2 I would like to make a suggestion. Why don't you try a few things and see if you can help it out some. There is probably a place for your ball that will work great, an maybe in the same house. First thing I would try is scuff up the ball with a gray scotch pad and give it some bite. Thenew balls require a lot of up keep which means cleaning on a regular basis. The particle balls more so than your Rule. I have one GP2 that is not really drilled for major oil but I can get the ball down sooner at the foul line at release and it will hook some. A different hand release can work for some people. I really hate to see you plug a new ball too soon. Some people just have trouble on oil with particle balls if they do not have either strong backends or dry outsides There is a good possibility that you could remove some static weights removed by drilling the finger holes deeper or a weight hole in some cases. It looks like in the photo that the CG is kicked out pretty good if I am seeing a the mark in the picture that I think I am seeing. I hope this will give you something that will help you out.

Thanks jodyk24,

I did try to put a green pad on my GP2 and I think I just put some shine on it. I will try the gray and some dull and shine? I haven't had a ball plugged in along time to change a drilling. Since I am what I consider an ole time bowler? I mean I started in 73-74 when a 300 or an 800 was a score. I really do appreciate any and all help with todays equipment.

Thanks,
Shipper

I think you might have a lack of axis tilt which could cause you to make the ball roll early and roll out, thus not seeing any hook, but without seeing you bowl, it's hard to say.  I would try to get a quick evaluation of your physical game by someone who knows what they are doing before you spend the time and money on a plug and redrill.  The plug and redrill might only be a quick fix to your problem.

DP3,

I guess with my game the one thing I would never be accused of is my ball rolling out. Even though I don't hook the ball a ton by todays standards, I still get a few revs on the ball.lol

I am not sure of my axis tilt, but my PAP is around 4 3/4 up a 1/4. I can see my GP2 try to make a turn towards the pocket, but in oil it just doesn't make the turn I want. My ACE far hooks far more than my GP2.

I did take one lesson just a few months ago from Ron Clifton, and the only thing he really changed was my hand position to stay behind the ball more and not come around the side of the ball. Not to brag, but most people that see me bowl, say for being a big guy, 6'1 270 I am smooth.
