Has anyone polished a Havoc yet??
« on: March 08, 2004, 08:19:58 PM »
Oil is a neccesity for this ball!  If the lanes start to break down I just can't stay right of the head pin.  I have considered taking it down to 600 and polishing it up.  Anyone tried this??  How dis it effect yours?

Drilled pin above and between bridge, MB just right of thumb hole.

Thanks!

Bigjfk,
I hit mine with Storm #1 polish just to get a little more length, and the carry seemed to improve for me.  The reaction was perfect for the house shot I bowl on.  I would try a little at a time, too much and you could change your reaction shape.  Let us know how it works for you.

Thanks for the input guys!

I am hoping to cut down on the action a little bit.  I just can't stay on the lane with this ball.  Hopefully this will it make it more playable for a light-medium light (the conditions I bought it for) shot.

Thanks!

Polished it up yesterday.  Takes a lot of the ball, total boards covered anyway.  A lot more consistent, more of an arc than a flip...  Scored well!

A much better mid condition ball now...

Hi Big,

Great suggestion, I also had this ball pretty strong for my ball speed.  I just polished it with Clean and Polish before league yesterday and mine is doing exactly the same as yours. It now has a very nice smooth arc to the pins, very controlled for me and still hit very well for not having a lot of angular movement, very impressive.  I would definitely recommend this for slower speed players like myself or to the mid/tweeners that like control to play more of the dry for consistent ball reaction.  It took away about 6-7 boards of hook.  I was able to use this ball in the 3rd game of my league which gets pretty burnt and finished with a nice 213 to reach another 700.  If anyone out there is wondering about doing this, have no fear.  It still provides a great reaction, just a little straighter.

This coverstock, Columbia's Super-Flex or Enhanced Super-Flex (I'm pretty sure it's one or the other) is one of the easiest covers to modify in any direction.

My only caveat is that the cover is very fine, 1500 grit, out of the box. I'd be very careful about adding a lot polish to the cover. You might possibly wind up with a very sensitive ball reaction, especially if you encounter any backend carrydown. Carrydown is common even on many league conditions.

If you do have any problems, there's a very simple solution. Sand the ball down to anywhere in the 600, 800, or 1000 grit range and then add your favorite polish. I have found various balls with the both the 2 most famous and versatile coverstocks, Super-Flex and Power Koil 18, to respond incredibly well to these methods.

In fact, I have my 2 current best balls, a Fire Quantum (PK 18 cover) and a Columbia Boss Pearl (SF cover) polished but after I took the Fire Quantum to 800 grit, and the Boss Pearl to 1200-1550 grit.

Thanks for the tips!  I am liking it so far though.  Still have a little trouble with my line disappearing after the 2nd game, but I guess I will just have to bite the bullet and buy something with a little weaker movement.  Thanks again guys!
