New Balls..
« on: August 09, 2004, 11:07:20 AM »
Wow.. I went and hid under a rock for a while.. It's almost bowling season, and I was thinking about updating my arsenal a bit. The equipment that I am currently carrying (and forgive me, I've forgotten drillings on most of these) are my Code Red SE, ball that I use when I need control, my Freak which I haven't thrown much at all since being replaced for the 3rd time and getting one with a 1" pin, and finally my original EMB which direly needs to be fixed, since the last center that I used it at pretty much refused to take the completely around the ball gouge out of it. I'll likely just deem the EMB unusable at this point because I'm done dealing with the crappy bowling center that ruined it and I'm making sure that everyone that does bowl there sees the ball that they won't fix. I do have a Pearl EMB and Threat that I have had a good deal of success with in the past, and I might bring the Threat back out for a 5 ball arsenal..

I do have some other concerns with equipment changes. At this point, I know that I'm going to be losing a bit of weight because of some medical treatments that I have to go through. This is probably going to be a Rick/Excal question, but what changes should I look to add to pitches? I am hopeful that I don't lose too much strength so I can continue to throw 16lb equipment, but that's also a possible change coming up. Any suggestions?

Hey Aristotle,

Glad to see you back but sorry to hear about the medical treatments.  The big picture is a little hard to paint right now because you haven't gone thru the actual changes as of yet.  If you lose weight, one of the important things to do is to change your grips and thumb size to fit or make sure you tape it accordingly.  Keeping a tight fit is essential in knowing whether or not the current weight you are using is truly too heavy or not.  If the holes of a ball are too big, you'll have to utilize muscle effort just to hang on so that can be deceiving.  Keep Ex and I posted on your health situation and we'll go from there...

Actually, both the condition and the treatment cause me to lose weight. At this point, I've probably dropped about 15 lbs since April. Not to mention the fact that I haven't touched a ball since Winter leagues let out last May. I decided, before I knew that I was sick, that I would take the summer off and let some rather nagging injuries heal. I've been pondering going to one of the centers that my friend owns and practicing again since leagues are going to start in under 2 weeks, but I haven't quite gotten around to it yet. Been too tired. haha! So what Track stuff have I been missing out on since the end of the season? I had been eyeing the AU, but now I'm not so sure.

Aristotle,
Sorry to hear about your health issues, hopefully everything works out for you.

As for your change of weight, Rick is right on when he says that you are going to probably have to change the hole sizes that you use. I doubt you will have to change pitches. Should your health cause a loss in strength then you may need some pitch changes......and certainly the change in weight of the ball.

There are indeed new releases, but I see the Animal Untamed as a good ball to go with the new ones......none of the new ones replace it.

I will try to explain the new ones to the best of my knowledge since I have yet to throw any of them (I have gotten a chance to throw a friend's Freakazoid briefly)

Rule: New coverstock, strong angular move in the backend, more than the Phenom Unleashed. Track says it will roll like a particle in oil.

Freakazoid: Orginal Freak's core redesigned and made symmetrical. From what I have seen this ball is longer than the Sheer Havoc and more angular. I am not sure I have seen a ball keep the pins as low as this one does when it hits the pins.

Hexplosion: Same core as the Hextreme, Spell, Crunch. Light load WOW 2, from everything being said this ball is just a hair above the dry heat. What I like, as with the other balls with this core, I expect it to be a control ball with not much hook.

I hope this helps, if you have any other questions, just ask me or Rick, we will get back to you soon.

Thanks for the advice guys.. I'm thinking that ultimately, I would like to find something that replaces my EMB, since it's pretty much done. I pretty much used it when I wanted to either really hook the ball or if there was pea soup on the lanes. I should probably replace my EMB Pearl as well. I'm not sure if my Threat is an adequate replacement or not, simply because of the massive back end that the Threat gets over the EMB Pearl. Regardless of the past success that I have had with my Freak, this 2nd one that I have received as a replacement just isn't what the first two were. I'm thinking that it's because of the really short pin, but I haven't been happy with the ball ever since it got replaced. Kinda funny.. I got the first replacement free under warranty, got a 2-3" pin, the 2nd replacement, the shop owner insisted that I pay for the shipping costs of getting the ball there, and I get a 0-1" pin. I would complain to the shop owner, but this is the same one that refuses to fix the ball that the bowling center that she manages chewed up. So at this point, I'm kinda considering replacing my Freak as well..

That stinks!  I would never do that to a customer, especially when nothing was at his/her fault.  Sorry to hear that, guys like that give shops a bad name...
It actually should've been covered by the distributor or Track would have picked up the shipping costs if it came directly from them, that sounds fishy.

Aristotle, for the time being, just make sure everything is tight in your grip before trying to bowl.  What I was trying to say before was that if a grip were too loose, then you'd have to use additional muscle effort to hang on so the weight of the ball may feel heavier than it actually is.  Let us know how your first couple of practice session goes and then Ex and I can assess the situation from there.

I will certainly do that.. Not really sure when I'm going to get an opportunity to practice at this point.. Kinda pondering on Sunday, since I'm going to be at a bowling alley for a "pre season" BBQ. Our league starts the week after that, so maybe I should bring my stuff with me. The bad part is that my week is typically riddled with stuff like school, doctors, and just being in bed from being sick, so finding the practice time can sometimes be a bit of a pain.. I know that I have lost quite a few of my callouses on my hands, so I'm pretty much prepared to be a blistery mess for a few weeks.. Gonna have to stock up on tape, and maybe go buy a few slugs just in case I need to tighten things up.. So guys.. Between the Rule and AU, is there a big difference? I looking to be playing in pretty much medium to dry conditions this year, and MAYBE some oil in one of the houses if I manage to find a team to get on.
