New Shoes
« on: November 23, 2006, 12:48:52 AM »
Hey TRACK fans. I'm getting a new pair of shoes for the first time in 16 years. My Linds finally gave out. I kindof hate to change up brands because the Linds have been so good to me for so long. But, I have heard a lot about Dynoroozs and of course all the hype around Dexter and Etonic. So my question is, what do you guys like or dislike? I want to make the right choice and value your opinions.

Thanks,

Mark Doods

This is going to sound funny, but the best luck I've had with shoes are the ones from Sports Authority and places like that.  I used to do the Kmart specials that you could get on sale for like $9.99, they would last one season, then I'd replace them.

I decided to splurge one time and got a pair of red, white, and blue Dexters from Sports Authority for $40 and they were so sturdy.

I then went big time and bought a pair of Dexters that were high end...and they started to fall apart within 2 months, and after less than a year, they were shot.

I have the newest Dexters now, and they are holding up well.  The SST 7's...they're a lil heavier and thicker, so that might be why.

I have had a pair of Tour Ultra Dynoroos for over 4 years and they are still prefect. Over that time I have bowled around 2000 games so durability is definitely not an issue with them. They are also very confortable and adjustable.

Sounds great Re-Evolution, one quick question though. I've heard that the PBA does not allow them on tour.Something about some of the dyno thyne shoes are and some arn't! I bowl on the reginal tour so I definetly need something that is approved. The Dynorooz are listed on the "approved list" but again I'd like to be sure, so if you have any information about that I would like to know!

Thanks Again,

Mark Dodds

P.S. Thanks for the great info everybody.

If they have the ABS logo on them they are not approved.

How can they approve or deny shoes?!

Companies have to pay a registration fee to be used in PBA competition, I thought it only applied to the national tour but I could be mistaken.

Dynorooz Tour Ultras ....... I have had mine for 2 years and they still look like new. They are sooooo comfortable that you don't even know you have them on.

Tour Ultras.  PM tekneek and he'll hook you up.  As the others said, the ones that say "ABS" are not approved (ABS didn't pay their registration fee) while the ones that say "Dynorooz" are.  The old ABS ones are hard to find new now, I'd be surprised if you ended up with a pair of those.

Personally in my opinion Dynorooz are the most reliable shoe on the market right now.  I had a pair of the Sport Classics and was so impressed with how they held up that I went out a bought the Tour Ultras are haven't regretted it since.  The one thing that I would say about the Dexters are that the ones that I have had seemed to be a little bit more comfortable then the Tour Ultra (although not by much) but to me that does matter since I went through 3 pairs of dexter's high shoes in a 4 year period.

Hey guys thanks so much for all the great info, it's really appreciated! I think that you have made up my mind. Re-Evolution, thanks for the ABS info. I had no idea about it and I didn't want to get to the first regional next April and have the director say " you can't ware them" that would suck big time!

Thanks Again,

Hey Mark,

I've used both Tour Ultras and I've had SST 5, 6 and now 7's.  The Dynorooz are very comfortable and I wore that on my right foot but I like using my SST 6's on the left foot due to the wider slide sole.  It offers me more stability vs a narrow shoe.  I also had a small problem with my ABS because they have a  trim around the edge on the slide foot and I personally don't like to slide.  Even when I changed to the non-slide soles, I would catch the edge and it would cause me to slide. However, other customers have not had the same problem as me.  This is definitely a true personal feel.  So it is dependent upon how much slide you like to have or not have.

Oh, another note, if you had Lind's classics and not customs, be careful when you try your first gum rubber sole.  They are extremely grippy for someone coming from Lind's classics and you will need to not use as much leg muscle as before on your non-sliding foot (especially in your power step).  You'll see what I mean when you try it...let me know if I can be of any further help to you, thanks.

Thanks for the info. Tenpinspro, I actually did think about that and
I'm a little hesitant about it as well. Not sure if it will throw my timing off or not. By the way, I do like to slide as a matter of fact I NEED to slide freely, if I sick I wind up on my knees...NOT GOOD and hurts like hell! Anyway I will keep your offer of help in mind and I may take you up on that offer. I should be trying them out next Tuesday for the first time. I'll let you know! Between now and then, any advice on breaking them in? Walk around the house in them with my booties on, is the only thing that I can think of.

Thanks,

Mark Dodds

That's funny, that's almost exactly what I recommend to my customers with any new shoe or higher end shoe that has a good rubber heel.  I don't even recommend the booties/no wet foots so the heel can get a little dirty and worn down some.  A clean and new heel can cause many bowlers to stick.

Since you need to slide, the Dyno's will be fine (the softer shoe in the Dex line would be the SST 6 LX).  I also suggest changing to the heel which offers more slide then.  Try it a few times without a ball just to make sure you can get the right amount of slide on your approach and adjust the soles and heels accordingly.  At first when the interchangeable soles and heels came out, I thought it was going to be complicated but after I found my personal combination, I've only had to divert from that combo when I travel out of state usually.  It really is helpful.

I had my first pair of Linds for almost 18 yrs and they were pretty worn down by the time I was done with them.  I'd have to assume yours are in pretty much the same shape so a new pair of shoes is a pretty big change in feel IMHO.  Just holler if you need anything...

I went from custom made Linds from when they made your shoes by drawing your foot and make the shoe from the imprint. I bought a pair of ultras at the Mini-Elminator in Vegas in 04 and have not regretted it since.

The only thing I had to get used to was the right foot as Rick has mentioned. I had to put cigarette ashes on it till I got used to it being so sticky. Now I don't have any trouble.

Best shoes I have ever worn and they don't show any signs of wear after going on 3 years of use.

Hey Ship,

The only reason I mentioned customs was because I thought I remember a customer who had a very old pair of Linds 20+ yrs and they had the nub technology (like Linds Exxtras) and the gum rubber on the other shoe.  It was an option for customers even back then when ordering customs.

I also used to use cigarette ashes when I couldn't slide but so many houses now that have outlawed smoking, it would not be an option for the bowler.  I currently tell bowlers to slide their feet under the ball return area because that's where dust/dirt will build up and it would also help us slide some.  It's carpet that cleans the bottoms of our shoe and a shoe that is too clean is what actually sticks.  The Reno National Bowling stadium opened with a small patch of carpeting right before walking on the lane but after so many incidents of bowlers sticking and falling over the foul line, they removed it.

I guess the biggest difference for some of us older bowlers who went from standard leather bottom type shoes is that we also learned to "shuffle" our feet in our approach vs the more modern game of taking "walking" steps.

If memory serves me correctly, Neil Burton wore a gym/tennis shoe on the PBA show in the 70's and I think that's when it hit manufacturer's that creating more friction for that style of bowler was very useful.
