Rick & Ex...I could use some help
« on: January 24, 2005, 12:43:29 PM »
I mentioned in another post that I just got my Freak resurfaced. I did so because of a loss of hook and a loss of carry on corners. I figured the resurface would do the trick. I had a chance to throw it for the first time tonight and was very disappointed. The ball hits just like it used to which is an improvement. The problem is the ball just doesn't hook much at all. The lanes had decent amount of oil, but the ball hardly moved. My thoughts were that when the proshop operator resurfaced the ball he put a little too much polish on it. He told me that it was at about 450 grit with polish. What can I do to make this ball as strong as it was previously? I want it back in Out of box condition. I was considering having him bring it down to a lower grit yet. Feel to give me some input.

450 grit with polish, is that sand to 450 then polish to what??  Box finish is 800-600 grit sand, this should to the trick.

TjFreaky,

Box on the Freak was about 1500 smooth. Find out for sure what the pro shop operator did with the surface, that would help a ton. 450 grit is VERY dull and the ball could just be burning up. If he put polish over top of 450 then it would really depend on how much polish.

Hey TJ,

The Freak was factory 1200 but I had more success after resurfacing putting it more about 600-800 flat, no polish.  I think some of the factory finishes end up smoother then we can get by hand but trying to match exactly by hand to a particular number makes them too smooth sometimes.

From personal experience with the Freak, "any" polish made this ball go extremely long (like the Havoc).  Anywhere from an 8-10 board difference, it really made it look like a different ball.  Try the 600 first bud, it should bring the old look back.

As hard as I try, I can never get a ball back to factory finish, thus the reason why I go through so many bowling balls. Instead of resurfacing/repolishing, etc, I just drill another of the same ball with the same drilling.

Most of us pro shop operators try our best to get the ball to how the customer wants the ball to react. Even then, we try our best, but sometimes close is all we can do, especially when trying to get back to factory surface.

If a factory finish doesn't perform or loses performance, I have had good success on both pearl and polished balls by doing the following:

1. I do a 6 sided light sanding with a 400 grit Scotchbrite Pad with the final sanding being 90 degrees to the track.

2. Give it a light coat of polish with Ultimate 500 Grit Quick cut polish and burn it in. (about a teaspoon on each side)

3. Give the ball a regular polishing with Columbia 2000 Grit polish. Since I don't have a "lot of hand" in my release plus I am rev challanged, I usually stop here. Burn it in.(about a half of teaspoon on each side)

4. In the event I want a bit more polish like on my Brunswick Impulse Zone, I give a light coat of Storm Xtra Shine over the other two polishes. (again about a half teaspoon on each side)

5. I then spray the ball with water and burn the water in.

The reason I say light coats is because I don't want to plug up the pores on the ball.

Works for me......I don't know about you.
