No Carry
« on: May 21, 2005, 11:49:28 AM »
I need some suggestions! I have carried 210+ since 1985 on all different shots and conditions. I am a power stroker, throw 18 to 19mph with above average revs, no means a cranker. I have recently lost 60 pounds and now find my self unable to carry! I am leaving 18-25 9 counts a night on decent to great hits. My flush hits are leaving the back row. Light hits are leaving weak 10's and 7's. I currently throw 15 pound. I live in area where there are no really knowledgable pro shop operators so I have no one to ask. I have 20 different opinions, I want to move up to 16 pound. Will this help? Most of my current equipment is drilled pin under ring or pin above ring, I have tried every coverstock , drill pattern and anything else I can think of. My average dropped 8+ pins the last 10 weeks of the season. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks struggling and ready to quit!

I don't think that having a bad streak is a reason to quit. Congratulations on your weight loss. That's much more important than having this streak. Anyway, having lost thirty myself I can tell you that what might be happening is an increase in ball speed that you might not be able to feel. I fought the same thing that you have, although I'm not throwing the ball the same as you are speed wise or rev wise. It did take another set of eyes behind me----my pro shop operator----to tell me and suggest this.......
try being a little more direct line wise if your lane conditions will allow this. If not you may ahve to try a little less aggressive drilling or a higher Rg ball that has a smoother, arc type reaction to give your revs a chance to knock pins around.
 Good luck!!!!!!!!!

papachicken,

There could be a number of reasons for the carry problems.

With the weight loss you could have loss strength as well? Which means you could be getting less hand now than you were before.

Do you happen to know your Positive axis Point? This will let us know how you throw the ball. I think it would help, because with what we know so far the possibilities are endless as far as the problems you are having.

Your weight loss could have changed several possible factors in your bowling game:

finger sizes, span, pitch requirements, timing, release point, PAP, tilt, etc.

Your leaving the back row hints at your release being very different.
I'd also suspect timing changes (60 lbs is a LOT for any height person).

Any or all of these could mean your balls are no longer drilled correctly for spna pitches AND pin/CG/MB placements.

BTW congrats on the weight loss. I suspect your whole life has gotten better, or at least changed dramatically!! Hopefully, for the better. (Need a whole new wardrobe, expensive.)

3 1/2 yrs ago for my wedding, I lost 80 pounds. I lost my timing, the holes were different sizes, pitches were different, everything. To top it off, I decided to go without grips and a slug, and dropped to 15# the following season. It took until late February to put everything together that season. Since then, eerything has been great. You need to find a pro shop operator who is willing to watch you, look at all of your equipment, and really refit you from the start as basically you were a first time bowler buying a ball.  I didn't mess with the pitches until January and that is when my timing started to come back.

Losing weight REALLY throws off a person's timing & balance at the line.

I'm willing to bet that's the reason for your carry issues.

Do yourself a favor & spend $30 on a coach a couple of times & things will probably straighten themselves out.

Clint, are you sure this wasn't 80 pounds during the first year after your wedding???

BJ, I think that gaining excessive weight will  do the same also. Anyhow I think it did for me. I've gained 25 pounds since October of last year and my bowling and average went south. Lost 12 pins in one league and 16 in the other.

My wife is a great cook....but you can ask Ex, I just saw him a few weeks ago and I still have the weight off. Too much stress and chasing 3 kids....plus my day job, the pro shop, answering q's here, Track's website....my metabolism runs 24/7.

Run, don't walk to the nearest silver rated or higher coach.
A really good coach will find your issue. Weak carry could be too many things to diagnose without video or being in person. Especially with todays equipment.
